He wants people to state WHY in their opinion they are overrated. Insted of being flippant and dismissive without anything of substance to one's argument. Saying something "sucks beyond belief" is fine, but ok, I think he wants to know why you hold that opinion. I figure most of us have said similar things, but when queried about it if you can't give solid, rational reasons... And I'm not talking about reasons that have to be agreed with. Thank you and thank god someone gets the picture  All I heard was JT immediately dismiss important parts of the music, and MisterMaxx just name-dropped and brought in other talents as comparisons. This is about U2 and their aesthetic, their music. Any other artist can be pitted against someone else and it can be said "well these guys run circles around ___". If my passion to explain music opinions comes across as facism well I cant help that and I dont see anything wrong with it when people make blatant blanket statements. On an added note, I dont think U2 is a singles,greatest hits band..If someone was to ask what to buy, to foolishly dismiss important parts of their work that make up the 'essence' of the band, well to me thats just plain wrong. I wouldnt say get Bowies greatest hits ..folks interested in him need to get the early stuff as well as the all important Berlin trilogy that includes Low, Lodger etc..difficult to get through but important non-the-less..those are important steps to understanmding the whole artistry of Bowie..same with George Clinton..dont just get Motor Booty and dismiss important shit like One Nation and Chocolate City and whats on Chocolat City and what Chocolate City means etc...aww fuck it.

However, the original topic was about whether or not the author should get their albums or if their greatest hits covered most of what was worth hearing. After wading through a lot of U2's shit, I can say with confidence that I believe the greatest hits albums would cover it (except for a small handful of songs, like Bullet the Blue Sky, Babyface, and Wild Honey). And nothing rdhull says is going to prove anything wrong with that statement because it's my opinion.

This is part of the problem. You act as if music is some type of competition, like the Olympics. Music is an art of expression. Its participants don't line up and run against each other, they don't play with a ball to outscore each other. One's style doesn't have to be equalled to be of equal merit. Believe it or not, just because something is different doesn't necessarily make it inferior or superior. Sometimes it's just different. Of course there are musicians who are more accomplished in some ways than U2, but if we're going to go that route, NOBODY outside of Jazz is worth anything, so we can just forget about any group mentioned in this thread based on how well they play their respective instruments. I mean seriously, if some of you don't like U2, that's fine, because we're all entitled to like whatever it is we like. But the original poster asked for suggestions from people about what's best to get from their catalog, and to rank on 'em like you're doing is akin to all the anti-Madonna bashing that you get your feathers ruffled by when people do the same thing in the MYRIAD of threads devoted to her. 'Tis your right to do what you're doing, just as it IS an anti-Madonna fan's right for their opinions of her and everything else about her in a thread dedicated to her. I see you don't know how to debate either, rd.  Why don't you address mistermaxx's solid points without trying to put him down or guessing that he was lying for some reason. That's just juvenile.
And I've already explained to you what I don't like about U2's music. Somebody else explained it well too- half of an album is pretty good, and the other half is filler. That's their formula. I prefer to listen to complete albums by the really talented songwriters. Now Bono might be a good songwriter for the occasional song (One, With or Without You, Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Beautiful Day) but when he fills up an album with quality songs I'll start listening to them again. Their last album was the closest they've come to that, so they are improving. But at least us casual fans have the singles. As far as having to own everything an artist does to get a full picture of their artistic abilities, some of us are white collar workers that pay bills. I can't afford to buy every David Bowie album in existence. And why should I buy "Boy". Just to see where they came from? Hell no. If I didn't like what I heard from it in the first place, I'm not gonna pay for the crap just so I can spout my so called "educated opinions" on a Prince website all day. Someone asked for my opinion on what they should get, and I told them mine. That's that. This time instead of cussing me out vehemently, why don't you actually try to dispute the points I'm making?
