I pretty much had been growing out of Frank Zappa's brand of cynicism about American culture for quite a while when I attended a concert in the Chicago area.

He did this audience participation thing where he kept repeatedly exhorting us to, "show me your thumb, show me your thumb, show me your thumb."

And of course we were all holding up our thumbs, "just like at a big rock concert"(line used often by FZ to describe how kids act at shows).

So we're all pressing towards the stage holding our thumbs up and Frank finishes the song with a cold ending- the music suddenly stops and Frank says, "show me your thumb if you are dumb" turns his back towards us and lights a cigarette.

That was the last straw.

I stopped buying Janet's albums, (since All For You) basically coz they're shit. neutral I refuse to buy crap music- but once upon a time, I was a massive fan of her stuff and even collected her old vinyls. Now, I never would.

I can't really say that I've made a conscious effort to completely boycott an artist. Well, there is this one artist, but I still kinda have love for her. She went on to my Myspace page and personally dissed me. (She was a cool friend and I always came to see her perform) But for some reason I can't stay too mad at her. Whatever issue she may have with me is her own fucking problem. shrug But at some point in the future I would like to have a nice long chat with her and sort this out.

Otherwise, it would take me a great deal for me to completely ostracize an artist. They would have to do the meanest, cruelest, sickest shit for that to happen. And even though I've seen some go off the deep end (Adam Ant, MJ, etc.) I can always go back to their music and reminisce of a better time when they were sane. Cuz at that point, they have to be out to fucking lunch. And I would only just pray for them by then. Even with Prince. If I find that his music isn't as good today (and this is for any artist), I'll just respect what he's doing now but worship his older material.

I know a lot of orgers have given up on their former purple hero for whatever reason (youtube video boycott, NPGMC shutdown, "Planet Earth" lol), but I can pardon him for that because he's human. And humans sometimes don't make the greatest of decisions. But Prince has been too important to just give up on. Maybe he isn't making the amazing stuff he did in the 80's, but so what? He's still an amazing artist who can still rock your world. It'll take a whole lot for me to hate an artist. They would have to personally do something to me that can cause me some harm like beat me up or sexually abuse me or a loved one or maliciously throw eggs at my window. But the ultimate sin would be if they went on record and said some offensive shit about me personally, like "NWF IS A STUPID N**GER WHO SUCKS COCK!!!!"

And by that point I would just find their address and probably do something like bomb their house after having gone insane and distraught from those shocking sentiments. lol You just don't do things like that. You just don't. no no no!

I was nearly quitting Prince when I realised how neurotic he is. I dislike that "no pictures, no videos allowed" thing...

I think about MJ, but unlike many radio stations I guess, even if he would have had to go to jail, I'd still listen to his good songs, I mean, his old stuff is good no matter what he says or does.

Boy George. I used to love him in the 80's in Culture Club. But drugs and smoking have completely destroyed his voice. He doesn't sound the same at all.
Plus, I got sick of his endlessly nasty attacks on other artists, not to mention his endless arrests including one for kidnapping a prostitute.
Not to mention that he used to be so beautiful, now he's fat and ugly. And he's not released any new material in a long time.

Morrissey: Liked him in my teens and early twenties, but came to realize that his music glorified depression and that he was entirely full of shit. Was pleasantly surprised by "That's How People Grow Up", but otherwise can't stand the guy.

Springsteen: Haven't stopped supporting him, but Magic was the first release of his that I didn't buy. Too many cryptic lyrics and I hate Brendan O'Brien.

Tom Waits: Was a hardcore fan until he asked the musical question, "Why are we arming the Israeli army?". Gee, Tom - could it have anything to do with the fact that the country's constantly under siege just for existing and that this includes terrorist attacks against civilians? Kiss my ass, dude.

I have stopped supporting various singers (not Prince, but others), only because I lost interest in their music. It had nothing to do with what they did or did not do.

Im guessing by "support" you are meaning going to shows, buying their new albums. I really havent tossed anyone aside like that mainly because i try to avoid people that come out today and everyone is on them like they are the greatest thing ever and then they are gone, no longevity, no catalog of work to base anything on. So there isnt anyone like that, but i would say Mariah and Janet are nearing it with me. Mariah just has gotten so "tired" with these albums and singles being nothing more than a checklist of hot producers and big duets for this month, plus her sex appeal has drpped a million %% with this record, her recent weight loss is way too much. As for Janet really the same thing, but Janet just really fell into this trap where she pushed aside "pop" in favor of this new breed rythym pop, and her singing has sounded like she isnt really even interested in doing the records, almost like she knows.

I haven't given up Mariah yet, but I do have to admit that I was not all that impressed by E=MC2. As for the weight loss, Mariah looks hot as hell! Her body makes me like this excited drool drooling horny jerkoff but her most recent album makes me feel like this. rolleyes bored I would just like her to do a nice grown up album next time out.

I guess that I gave up on R.E.M. and Pearl Jam though. I was huge fans of both bands, and while I still listen to them occasionally, my interest in them began to wane around the late 1990s. And Whitney's drug problems really made me lose interest in her, though I'm hoping for a huge comeback from her,

typing

Im the opposite on the Mariah thing, for some reason she has lost Sex Appeal with this record, which is strange because she could have gained it. To me her "sexiness" was on fire during the MIMI promotion and Tour, than she did some crazy diet and lost it all. Musically i feel she just doesnt have that "IT" album in year at all. As for REM and Pearl Jam, well REM just made their best record in about 15 years, though i have always felt they are the strongest album artists of the last 20 years. As for Pearl Jam, i actually dig them more now than their early days, maybe because grunge and that hysteria died

I support good music. If someone is still delivering the goods artistically then I support that. I support the art, not so much the person.

I need to add Usher into this. I was a fan until Confessions came out. He seemed so cool in the 90's and early 2000's but once Confessions dropped and he got arrogant and was publicy dissing Chili from one of my favorite groups, TLC, I could not support him and I still haven't. He's fake and his music has gotten worse.

I love Mariah but I fell off the wagon with her with Rainbow but then came back with Mimi. E-MC2 was boring and if the next release is more of the same then I'll be done with her again.

I don't know if that was meant to be a joke or not, but it was funny. CMB was a BIG group in the early 90s. They just kind of fell off...especially when they went to Sony Music.

"I'd rather have a smaller following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith. We don't want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do."

fine, as a matter of fact i just bought reba's #1's, no money for you skanks! smaller following you want, smaller following you got!
