Artists/Singers who don't have Grammy Awards that should

I was just going through the new release list and saw that they are issuing Diana Ross' sophomore album on cd, Everything is Everything. When I read the description about the cd, it said that Diana was nominated for a Grammy, but lost to Aretha Franklin that year.

I then went to grammy.com and searched to see if Diana had ever won and to my surprise, she hasn't ever won one. I just find that interesting.

Is there any artist/singer that you think should have a Grammy, but has never won or been nominated?

There have been many aritsts that never one or one very few because back then you had to 'earn' a Grammy....these days they're just given out so easily. Granted..they've made horrible decisions in the past (Jethro Tull wins over Metallica for best Metal album?) but it took Aretha decades to win her 19 Grammy's and it's only been 5-6 years and artists like Alicia Keys and Beyonce have racked up a ton. I believe Keys has 10 already and Beyone has about 6 or 7 as solo artists and about 4 or 5 as a group

Prince has NEVER won a major Grammy. Even the year 'Purple Rain' was out he one in the R&B and Soundtrack catagories.

Didn't they honor Curtis the same year they gave MJ the special award?

I agree with u. It's like artists like Prince, Stevie, EWF, etc. had to work for years before they won (or was nominated). Someone like Alicia and Beyonce (on their first major release) wins 2 or 3.

You know, I remember watching in 1983 and was praying for Prince to win for 1999 and he lost. That really upset me. Then he did end up winning something for PR.

I gave up on the Grammys a few years ago. I used to be really into the awards shows and ceremonies, but I've almost completely lost interest. It's all about timing and likeability (which is why Prince has won so few). I don't get angry over these slights anymore. It's part of the territory. All those ceremonies are like that.

Robert Altman was at death's door before he won an Oscar, and that was a Lifetime Achievement Award. rolleyes I think not winning an Oscar/Grammy is a bigger badge of honor than is winning one.

They put her against Aretha Franklin? Damn, that was low evillol

I don't really think Grammy are that relevant or credible shrug

Marvin Gaye made 4 masterpieces in the 70's but was finally given a grammy for Sexual Healing(as opposed to his whole career) confused so you know how shady these mofos are.

I understand your point and agree with u. I just find it compelling to think that someone like Diana Ross has never won a Grammy. Maybe is something personal that her peers did not feel the need to let her win one. You know, Diana has a bad reputation with both her peers and fans. Many feel that she slept her way to the top. Maybe that's why she never won one.

I prefer for my favorite artists to not get a Grammy. Even back in the day, very seldom did an artist get a Grammy for an actual jam. Rick's "Super Freak" and Prince's "When Doves Cry" are the only two that come to mind and those two were crossover hits, unfortunately.

Usually when someone got an award, especially a Grammy, it was usually something slow, or something crossover. You never saw folks like The Barkays getting a Grammy for something like "Holy Ghost" or Cameo getting a Grammy for something like "Shake Your Pants". lol

Anxiety

the residents have been around for over 30 years and have done TONS of innovative work in music and multimedia, but i don't think they've ever gotten a grammy. i read that in 1980, their "eskimo" album was on a grammy short list, but it didn't make it to the actual nominees.

Yes he's won 6 or 7 total BUT he has never won in any of the 4 Top Categories...Album, Song, Record of the year and Best New Artist. He's never one any of those.

Not really any i can think of, there are alot of why didnt they win for this instead of that type of thing. Like how does PRINCE win for "future baby mama" and not even get glanced at for everything he did with Lovesexy, Emancipation, Rainbow Children etc... Or how does Elton John win for the Lion King and then lose for his best record in 25 years "Songs from the West Coast"?

Neither Queen nor Led Zeppelin ever won a Grammy. David Bowie received one Grammy in 1984 for "Best Short-Form Music Video." Elvis Presley won three Grammys---for Gospel in the early 1970s.

But the Starland Vocal Band ("Afternoon Delight") have a Grammy sitting on their shelves. A Taste Of Honey, who sang "Boogie-Oogie-Oogie," won Best New Artist in 1978, the year Prince would have been nominated. I'd make fun of them, but dammit they deserved that! (Don't laugh, y'all know that song and that bassline are still awesome)

Yeah how could i forget Queen and Zeppelin, especially Queen. But also the Beatles to my re-collection only have won about 4-6 grammies and half of them were for the "anthologies" that came out years back for the packaging and the "free as a bird" video
