80s funk jam of the day: "Welcome To The Club" by Brothers Johnson (1982)

I like the lyrics to this song. There's alot of humor here and it gives you a sense of how much fun the early 80s nightclub scene really was lol

Well, like a thug late at night, looking for a place to go
So I walked all around, peepin' through the doors of peep shows (ha ha ha ha)
Then a man saw me,he chased me down the street a half a block
Then some people screamed "Hey you! Come join the club,we'll work you up"
Let's rock

lol wouldn't you love to go back to those days?

"Funk It (Funkadelala)" is another great song by them.Alot of people think their music declined after they stopped working with Quincy Jones but I disagree.I like all of their post-Quincy albums.

I remember this one too. I just didn't know it by name. This song
and You keep me coming back are the last two songs by the brothers
to get airplay on the radio. I might have to look for those post quincy
albums but i think i'll leave 1988's kick it to the curb alone. I think
only 2 people bought that anyway the brothers johnson themselves. lol

I'm one of those few people who bought their 1988 album 'Kickin' lol It's actually a decent album, considering the dreadful period that it was recorded in.I really like the song "I Fresh".

It can't compete with their best albums but it's pretty decent. There are a few cool tracks. The late 80s was a rough time for 70s funksters, with the rise of hip hop and New Jack Swing.

Indeed, indeed.

I'm really starting to dig 'Winners' too, by the way cool
It doesn't quite measure up to their earlier work, but it's a solid effort.

nod I like 'Winners' alot.It was the first album that they produced themselves, without Quincy and I think they did a remarkable job.

I had always assumed that they quit after "Fundadelala". I don't remember hearing anything from them in the late 1980s. Of course, the radio in my area was too busy playing music from a certain little goodie two shoes and similar artists. lol

'Funkadelala' and 'Welcome To The Club' are from their 1982 album 'Blast' (a greatest hits collection that featured four newly recorded songs). They actually released two more albums after that:

***'Out Of Control' (1984)---contains the late '84 hit "You Keep Me Comin Back".

***'Kickin' (1988)---contains the minor hit "Kick It To The Curb"

Was kick it to the curb even a minor hit? lol
It didn't get any play on the radio stations in my area. The only way
i knew about it was seeing the video on video soul. Even billboard said
that song was a weak comeback for a classic group like the brothers
johnson.
I was scared to buy the album after hearing kick it to the curb but i
was heavily into jesse johnson every shade of love and ta mara and the
seen's blueberry gossip so i didn't have a real urge to buy the
brothers johnson album at that point. I would love to pick up a copy
at a used vinyl store just to see what it sounds like. Thanks for giving
me the heads up on blast. I didn't know about that compilation back then.
I just assumed welcome to the club was from one of their latter day
albums.

'Blast' has a few interesting stories behind it.In early 1982,the brothers began working on a new album. They were producing it themselves and it was to be their follow-up to 1981's 'Winners' album. The album was titled 'Funk It'.Unfortunately, their record company (A&M) rejected the project. They decided to release a Brothers Johnson 'Best Of' album instead. Thus,'Blast' was released in the fall of 1982.The first four tracks are from the rejected album. The remaining songs are greatest hits.
There's another story that claims the brothers simply didn't have enough material ready for a new album,so they just compiled the new tracks with a greatest hits set.

SIDE ONE---
Funk It (Funkadelala)
Welcome To The Club
The Great Awaking
I'm Giving You All My Love
The Real Thing

SIDE TWO---
Ain't We Funkin Now
Strawberry Letter #23
Stomp
Get The Funk Out Ma Face
I'll Be Good To You

The Brothers Johnson's "Out of Control" wasn't a bad album, but you can tell their sound was becoming more subdued. The lead single "You Keep Me Coming Back" was mentioned, but my favorite song on the album was the instrumental "Tokyo."

I like the last track "It's All Over Now" music It's a moody,synth-laden ballad.

I know there's a Japanese import 'Winners' CD but it's expensive and hard-to-find
confused It contains a bonus track called "Let's Swing".I believe this track was the B-side of the "Stomp" 45 single?

Is 'Blam' really out of print? I have the remastered 'Blam' CD that was released in the 90s.

Yeah you can go to any music site like amazon or spun.com and
it will tell you the title is currently out of stock. At spun
you can be put on a waiting list to get a used copy or hope
that it will go back in print. I don't know about imports but
they are far too pricey for me.
