Winter, Tori Amos

Just listened to Boys for Pele and now listening to Little Earthquakes.
'Crucify' and 'Winter' two of Top 100 pop songs of the 21st century. At least.
'Precious Things' and 'Silent All These Years' is also on Little Earthquakes.

Such good stuff man.

Wow....the Tori gang's slacking. lol Must've missed this thread. I haven't listened to Tori's albums in their entirety for a while. I'll listen if songs pop up on iPod shuffle, but I haven't been in the mood for her stuff lately. Hope I'm not growing out of her. I'll forever love "Blood Roses" though....regardless.

Such an exquisitely, painfully beautiful song. So intense and personal it almost feels like I'm standing there as a small child. Joni's Blue does the same thing to me. heart

cheesy as it is, this song will always get the credit for encouraging me to take a look at myself and start appreciating who i am. i still love this song and i still think it's one of her best!

WINTER
Tori Amos

Snow can wait
I forgot my mittens
Wipe my nose
Get my new boots on
I get a little warm in my heart
When I think of winter
I put my hand in my father's glove
I run off
Where the drifts get deeper
Sleeping beauty trips me with a frown
I hear a voice
"Your must learn to stand up for yourself
Cause I can't always be around"
He says
When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change my dear

Boys get discovered as winter melts
Flowers competing for the sun
Years go by and I'm here still waiting Withering where some snowman was
Mirror mirror where's the crystal palace
But I only can see the myself
Skating around the truth who I am
But I know dad the ice is getting thin

When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change my dear

Hair is grey
And the fires are burning
So many dreams
On the shelf
You say I wanted you to be proud of me
I always wanted that myself

He says
When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses have gone ahead
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change
My dear
I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

i know that's the point of the song but i feel cheesy saying i relate to it, lol. but really, even today...17 years later...when i'm feeling bad about myself i put this on and it helps me focus and sort it out.

nod I think it's an emotional experience that all girls who had daddies can relate to. It just pulls at my heart when I listen to that song.

Never looked at it that way. I grew up without a father. But I understanding wanting someone to love themselves.

i don't think the father has to be your biological father but someone who played that role for you as a teacher/protector.

i credit it for the same thing, to some degree, only relatively recently. hearing it live in Toronto, and then listening to it a lot afterward was one of the tiny little pushes that i gave myself to look at how i was living and how i wanted to live and coming to terms with how to make that transition, trying to hang on to the good that i already had in my life while re-arranging everything else and trying to make it work. so okay, it didn't work out exactly how i'd hoped, but it was a small help in putting me on the path.

Exactly...and then when you lose that person the feeling becomes all the more acute. That song took on a completely different meaning for me after my father died.

Exactly ~ in my life, it wasn't my dad, but a very wise friend who was so kind and encouraging and saw the depth in me that I had forgotten.
