That notwithstanding, this is probably one of the largest music festivals in the country featuring black artists. It averages 200-250,000 attendants and generates about $150 million a year over a 3-day period. So, no, it's not a hair show. [Edited 6/11/08 14:10pm] I think Essence is the largest festival. There are others (Soul Music Festival that takes place in Jamica every Summer, Tom Joyner Black Family REunion, etc.), but I do believe that Essence is the largest. I think it is too, but I couldn't find stats confirming that.

I mean, they aiight but the way folks carry on about them at Essence, the fact that they close the festival EVERY year and folks get so excited to do the Electric Slide for 3 hours is TOTALLY beyond me. Maze is better than "aiight". They are da'bomb. I love their work (especiall their first 4 albums and their last one). Maze is truly a southern..black group that just happens to be from Cali. BTW, they don't electric slide for 3 hours. Maybe an hour. Shiiiiittttt, it felt like FOUR hours. When I went in 2004, I was on the floor and there were people doing the slide by me the WHOLE time Maze performed. I left early cuz I felt like I was at a party with my Mom's drunk friends trynta dance. Maze sounds good, but they've been doing the same set it seems like for the past 10 years. And I don't understand who decided they'd close the festival EVERY damn year. Most festivals close with the biggest, most popular artist in the lineup. They're not all that IMO. All of you 55 and 60 year olds will be off of work that Monday and would stay for Maze anyway. I totally agree with you, I've seen Maze about 10 times and refuse to see them again unless I get a new album. They put on one of the best shows I've ever seen, but I cannot take another verse of Before I Let Go or Southern Girl. [Edited 6/11/08 15:13pm] **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

[Edited 6/11/08 15:13pm] Well, most of my friends have been going to Essence since it started and they were in their early 20s. I think the average age has crept up as we've gotten older. And their songs do go on FOREVER. Funny, they'll be in Dallas with Mint Condition on 7/19. I really wanted to see MC but wasn't feeling having to deal with Maze too. Thanks God I'm going to Holland instead.
