I think I have the one you're referring to, but it's called "Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 Live". I love it! It's HONEST! Totally live, and great. The band is small. Not at all the big lineups they came to use later, but I like that. It feels more straightforward.

Mike's voice was starting to change, but they're still doing all the songs I love; "Looking Through The Windows", "Got To Be There", etc. Jermaine did GREAT versions of "Daddy's Home" and Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar". It's great to hear Michael singing background vocals too, especially on "Daddy's Home". Oh, and they did Stevie's "Superstition" too.

This album is definitely a treat for the hardcore fans of that era. I'm not sure what casual fans would make of it though, since the band is so small, that it feels almost like a garage band playing. The Japanese audience are quite reserved too, which doesn't help matters when the boys are doing their little staged arguments ("It's my turn to sing now", lol). Anyway, this album makes such a contrast with the Michael we came to know later. This feels less contrived, and of course the songs are more melodic. I love it.

Good post. I agree witcha, I always thought they should have picked a different venue. Definately somewhere here in the states because the reception from the fans then would have been through the roof. Like a "live" album was always like. That was the standard. And usually rock bands in the 70's always released live albums from Japan because one, it made the bands appear to be really popular worldwide and two, the fans usually went totally bonkers and it sounded good on the albums. Not the case with the J5. Should have released a live album from L.A. or Chicago or any major city in the U.S.

I have a question for the J5 historians....when I was a little kid, we had the J5 lp called GET IT TOGETHER which featured "Dancing Machine" as the last song on the record. But, I was on allmusic.com and saw that Motown released a record called DANCING MACHINE in 73/74..was the song "Dancing machine" released twice?

Yes it was. It was a hit so Motown decided to remix it and make it the title track to the next J5 album.

True. It was originally released as "Jackson 5 Live in Japan" but only in Japan

it was later released in 1986 as "Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5 Live). Hip-O Select re-released in for the first time on CD back in 2005

Absolutely amazing concert. The vocals on "Lookin Through The Windows" and "Got To Be There" are supreme. There is something very pure and raw about the whole concert- Mike's voice changing, the band- the backing vocals are amazing.
