I believe that Mariah is listed as having the biggest opening week sales this year so far according to Soundscan, but that number is probably in dispute, since Radiohead's "In Rainbows" sold well over a million downloads in the first week but wasn't charted by Soundscan. I think Lastdecember could probably elaborate on this.

Exactly. The reason being, is that soundscan is the "accepted" way, that contributes $$ to all the labels, and "personal" websites DONT, so they DONT get tracked. The BULL of this reasoning is that "personal" webssites cant be trusted, which is crap because a download from Radiohead.Com is the same as iTunes, the same database entries, all can be verified, in fact, PERSONAL websites are more verifiable than iTunes and others.

but since most of those "sales" were "free" they're not going to count anyway. shrug

Well, technically you're right, most of the downloads were free, but when they averaged out all of the downloads with the paying customers, the average take for each download was between $5 and $6, which is on par with what the labels get for each album sold in the USA. The only difference is that the money went straight to the band and not the record companies.

And 967k is less than 1 million.

That's very astute of you! You're a quick learner!!!! Dont' worry, that's a number Janet will never see this year. lol

lol I think it's a safe bet that Usher and Mariah will reach platinum status, despite the sorry state of the music industry right now.

He's just so ordinary. He & Justin can battle it out for the title of "most inoffensive & bland"

I think Justin has better songs...

But usher is more "talented"...

not sure i havent heard it but what annoys me the most about the new album is the fact they refer to him as the 'king of rnb' disbelief

Somebody had to take the title from Bobby Brown. lol

mariahs cd i think is the weakest of her career, what a poor follow up to a fantastic record.

ushers cd is also a very poor follow up to confessions.

what the fuck is happening in the music industry right now. there hasnt been a decent record all year.

wow, this year has been great for music, i think. granted, most of the stuff i'm loving isn't by mega-pop-stars. and the fact that i'm actually seeking it out for a change is probably a factor. but there's plenty of great music out there.
I don't want this to end

Yeah i agree, i already have about 10-12 "best" cds of the year and its only June with some major artists that "always" deliver the goods still to come in July and on. As for mega-pop stars (are there any at this point) i think we need to call them MEDIA stars at this point, but i agree the 3 divas were a let down, though i got more listens out of Madonna, which wasnt a shock. But i was surprised at the Danity Kane record, the first 4 songs on that cd are better than Mariah and Janets whole albums put together for me, its scary that they "took" more chances than veterans like MC and JJ.

I saw it for $14.99 today at Best Buy... I thought it would be 11.99 or less seeing as it is brand new but oh well. I know it is only a few dollars difference but I have other stuff to buy.

Yeah thats true, and even if they were charging only i still think the cd would have opened really strong, i mean even after people got it free they still bought it. Labels and Soundscan will never let something like this debut, something that isnt going through an avenue that they are getting a cut from. Look at the big issue that was made over the Eagles record, they werent going to let them get that "exclusive" cd debut till pressure was put on and the cd ended up outselling everything out that whole year, in its first month.

Well best buy is feeling the crunch now, and im so HAPPY because i told people this years and years ago, when they BITCHED and REFUSED to understand why stores like Tower and Sam Goody had to charge 14.99 for new releases, no one wanted to understand business 101 but now that all the retail is gone, Best Buy is cutting its stock down 30-40% and raising its prices because they cant afford to lose the money they do on music, labels raised their prices once again, they now charge close to $13 per cd for a store to stock
