Mr. Mister - "Broken Wings" I was just reading a music blog that mentioned this tune. The writer referenced that VH1 referenced it as one of the "Most Awesomely Bad Songs" and Blender rated it one of the 50 worst songs ever.
Really? I always kinda liked the song. Not a favorite or anything, but do people really think it's that bad? I mean, I have bad taste and all, but really?

it's dated and it was seriously overplayed back in the 80s, but i don't think it's a BAD song. in fact, i've read several rave reviews of the new M83 album with comparisons to mr. mister, so i wouldn't be surprised if they're "awesomely bad" today and "retro chic" tomorrow.

Of course, now I'm all about The Young & The Restless...which I probably shouldn't mention out loud. Never heard of M83. I'll look them up. Thanks!

I guess what it boils down to is that I apparently don't get what makes for a bad or good song. In the end, it doesn't make a bit of difference, as I'm going to like what I like. I did, after all, start a topic on Hurt Me! Hurt Me! (But the Pants Stay On) and my love for it. Easily classifiable as a bad song. I can see the Mr. Mister tune being labeled as heavy on the cheese (and, yes, overplayed at the time) but I didn't think anyone would rate it on a "worst of" list.
Wow. I've never processed a Mr. Mister song that deeply.

Wow. I've never processed a Mr. Mister song that deeply. it's funny...i recall tears for fear's welcome to the big chair getting slammed by critics (well, i think someone mentioned this on mtv...i must have been ten years old at the time so i know i wasn't reading music mags---anyhoo)...i recall the main complaint being the music lacked any life...but i love their earlier stuff....so maybe it's a hatred of synth power ballads or something by the critic elite...i don't know... That's some montage! Re: soaps now. I find the actors are either horrid (and pretty) or not so pretty (but act well). You can't have both. I'm still entertained by Y&R, and don't laugh too hard but that theme song is one of my favorite pieces of music.

I think the hatred is more on Mr Mr than the song. I liked the song and it was really popular at the time. Days of Our Lives featured that song pretty prominently too. I know i can pick 50 worse songs than that. Christian Zombie Vampires

Yes and there you go. I didn't know who that was until I recalled the Days of Our Lives. They played that song, I need a hero, Friends and Lovers (obviously), Drive by the cars and like 2 Phil Collins songs. Christian Zombie Vampires

Thanks That brought back memories. Not sure when this clip is from. But DOOL was really good back then. I loved the Bo and Hope story that emerged from the whole Raven Serial Killer saga. I have seen snippet of it these days and it is terrible, well except for the old school folks like Marlena. But the dialog is really cheesy. I don't remember it being that bad back then with the Steve, Kim, Shane, Roman, Stephano, Marlena, Bo and Hope stories to carry it through. Good Times. Christian Zombie Vampires

Wow. I've never processed a Mr. Mister song that deeply. I don't think anything can really define a song as bad. Someone somewhere will love it. I hate Aqua and Ace of Bass but some people love them. I'd certainly say anything from Roxette is dreadfully bad. Christian Zombie Vampires

It's a classic, beautiful/smooth synth/keys melody and an anthemic chorus, I'm sure Bryan Ferry would have given anything to get that song!

Always loved it and always will. FWIW, I love "Kyrie," too. Mmmm, cheese. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

I wanted to smash the radio every time that mess played.
Awesomely bad, indeed. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I remember seeing it on MTV and they played the video to death. But I always dug the song. I think it gets a bad rap actually. It's not like it's "Come On, Eileen" or some whack shit like that. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Mayte covered that song in 1992. I still have the maxi cd single in my collection.

Can't stand that song. I think it would be a more interesting song if they removed the comma from the title. Then it would be a command. A porny command.

I always liked this song. It had an awesome synth melody and catchy hook to it that was great for a new wave power ballad (though technically Mr. Mister wasn't new wave and the new wave movement was waning and becoming mainstream synth pop by then). I remember VH1 saying that the song was awesomely bad not for the melody or hook but for its lyrics. They claim that they tried to be deep and profound with the lyrics but instead just sounded full of themselves. And yes the song was overplayed to death everywhere at the time. BTW, Tears For Fears was also huge around at the time, and the critics though they were a cheeseball new wave band at the time but took that back when they came with the Sgt. Pepper inspired "Sowing the Seeds of Love" at the end of the decade.
