Yeah, she was on public assistance for a while. I'm not sure what her part in it was, but her husband mismanaged their production company, they got divorced and he wasn't making his spousal support and child support payments. She talked with Jet magazine about it several years ago.

Age old story, esp with black female singers. They give their men the upper hand on everything,,,next thing you know, they get exploited and robbed blind out of everything including the clothes on their back.

Sad thing is, she never recovered from that. She still gets work which is essential but there's no demand on her anymore,,,and it really breaks my heart coz I love her.
