Ms. Dynamite

From NPGMC's Paisley News page for November 5:

A Little More:
MS. DYNAMITE'S video 4 the jam "A Little More" is light years ahead of all the U.S. wannabees. 2 bad it will never c the light of these years 4 BET is afraid of CHANGE.

I did peep this video (I think the song's actually titled "It Takes More") on the Much Music channel, and he's right. The video / song is sooo on point. Peep the lyrics:

It Takes More
The shit that you promote, fightin, fuckin, like you don’t want 2 grow.
You talkin so much sex, but u nah tell the youts bout Aids and u tell them bout consequence, no!
You talkin like you a G, but you killer killing your own, your just a racist mans pussy.
Tell me who you wants 2 know, what, when, who, where or how you do your hoe.

Pre chorus:
Certainly not, me
Certainly not, me
Cos baby personally, I like 2 b challenged mentally
I’ve heard it all b4 gangsters, pimps and whores
Quality is poor

A girl likes me needs more!

Chorus
It Takes More 2 amuse a girl like me
So much more 2 confuse a girl like me
They got u, cos while you’re braggin bout your badness your just
Avoidin, addin to the reel shit that’s happening to us
Who gives a damn about the ice on your hand
If it’s not 2 complex tell me how many Africans died for the buggettes on your rolex
So what you pushin a nice car, don’t you know there ain’t no such thing as superstars
We leave this world alone so who gives a fuck about the things you own

Pre Chorus: x1
Chorus: x1

Now I could sit and shit about how I sex
But my business is my business I got self respect
I could talk bout how my press could pimp man doe
Get the keys 2 his ride and his home
But I looked it up and that would make me a hoe
Little sisters now I really gotta let u know
Reel women ain’t sexin 4 no mans doe
Reel women work hard 2 make they own
And we can all chat bout gats and blacks on blacks
Enforce the hypes and all b stereotypes
But youts are watchin that ain’t what I’m here for
Show em 2 think higher and aspire 2 b more

Those lyrics don't look entirely accurate, that's not even counting typos. Anyway she's something a little different and fresh yeah, won Mercury Music Prize (UK equivalent of the award NERD just won in USA) and MOBOs this year for her album.

She seems to be a very cool person.
The LP didn't really grow on me, her voice somewhat reminds me of Res (i prefer "How i do" much better though), it lacks of style & directions, she tried too many options IMHO.
But it's definitly interesting and could evolve a nice way.

Yeah I wasn't dissing you, just giving her more credit than those badly transcribed lyrics.

Interestingly Prince bigs her up as something different to America when her album was written and produced with/in USA.

Really? More than likely it's because he heard about her in the UK cuz we ain't heard a peep from her here.

Guess he was commenting moreso on what's being promoted here rather than just produced.

BRILLANT STUFF. One of the best records of 2002.

Here's my BEST OF 2002 list so far...

1. Meshell Ndegeocello "Cookie"
2. Darius Rucker "Back To Then"
3. Kelis "Wanderland"
4. Ms. Dynamite "Little Deeper"

Can I tell you how much I LOVE Ms. Dynamite???

I found out about her on a trip to London with my cousin!
I actually have the single they released after "It Takes More", which I guess is her signature song "Ms.Dynamy-te":
It's a nostalgia jam (think Stevie's "I Wish" theme), but completely with the Brittish/Jamaican R&B flair (as she muses on the simpler days gone by and her grandma's rice and peas...)

I was hoping that the American audience would discover her-let's just keep our fingers crossed that they'll hear what she has to say eventually...

Therapy

Thanx for this thread, I was about to write her off. I read what Prince said about her and still wrote her off, which is unusual for me. Usually, if he bigs someone up, I go and check them out for myself.

After reading the lyrics, I can see the attraction. I find it hard to get into the music and style, yet I really like the message that is coming through with this. So thanx for the alert.
