Nah, put black face on Adele or Joss Stone and people will think they're average. Amy Winehouse is different. There's something very raw and real about her voice, provided she's not intoxicated of course.

That's what I'm saying. There are terrible artists, black & white, who get attention from the media, and there are good ones who get ignored. Amy is a good singer. She's not a revelation, but she's way better than Fergie or Joss Stone who are trading on their sex appeal & fitting into some marketing demographic. My Legacy

Well Prince seems to like her and was obviously impressed enough by her song-writing to perform one repeatedly last year. Mind you, what the fuck does he know about a good tune.

Well, I don't think it's his taste in tunes that's questionable, but his taste in female voices which is what the thread is about anyway. Vanity... Apollonia... Kim Bassinger.... Carmen Electra... Mayte. His taste is in poontang, not female voices. But, I do love Amy's voice. I'm missing my best friend Yes it was Incredible There's no reason to pretend

Christ on a bike, I think Lauryn Hill was amazing too, and yes, she was "the best thing since sliced bread" during her time in the spotlight by everyone. That was probably THE album everyone had and liked back when I was in college, whites, blacks, Asians, everyone. Why dog on Amy Winehouse, cos I bet if she WAS balck, certain people might just put her up with Erykah and Lauryn in their little sectioned off world.

Soul is soul and everyone I know, white or black knows the difference. People WERE impressed that she could could sing soul, period. Most people know there are some white people who can sing soul, especially from England. Now we really know that she was backed by the Dap Kings and that's what helped her with her soul sound. People need to give Sharon Jones the props because she's out there doing it EVERY NIGHT with Amy's band and not strung-out talking about what a great singer she is. Everyone I know who's ever seen Sharon has no choice but to FEEL Sharon and when Amy Crackhouse can do that, then I'll pay attention regardless of her skin color.

She's the most overrated singer alive!
Yes, she has talent but not as much as people think. There are so many singers of all races with more talent who don't get the attention she does because they aren't being arrested every 2 seconds.

Sorry but that's a racist point of view, black artists have given it up to blue-eyed soul artists for years. Aretha Franklin wasn't the Queen of Soul until she went to Muscle Shoals, AL and played with an all white band. While I agree that the genre itself comes from African American freedom and the bullshit they've went through throughout the years because of racist behavior, the fact is, once Funk and Soul music became popular music, EVERYONE started singing it. Tell me Steve Winwood doesn't sound exactly like Ray Charles...he has since he started imitating it at 13 years old.

What I do find extraoprdinary about Prince.org, is how they trash great black singers like, and praise average vocalist like Amy, Joss Stone, or Fergie... Amy Winhouse... Like I already said many times before If Amy was a black woman, nobody would care about her... In a wierd way, I agree with you. I think the reason that nobody would care is is due to the fact that there isn't ANY black artist out there that is making the kind of music that Amy has put out. People are going to mention, Eryka or Jill but the truth is, not only does their music sound different but, their music has begun to sound real "trivial"; as far as Neo-Soul goes. Also, the fact that Amy has had problems has added to her appeal. People either love Amy or hate her. I would rather have someone with REAL problems singing to me about those problems than someone like some of these singers who just sing the same thing over and over again. No,no,no I can't remember white folks saying Lauryn Hill : Best Female Singer Alive Never... And please being white helped a lot of blue eyed soul artists tremendously, there have always been a kind of fascination concerning blue eyed soul artists which lead them to be constantly overrated... This is far harder for a black rocker or a black country artist to succeed than it is for a blue eyed soul artist... If white folks really want to prove me they can do black music, they have to outperform and outdone everything black artists have accomplished... Period

You have a point Krayzie we do judge based on colour and that why Amy has been given this title, She is however a great artist if you consider her colour, age, sex, and lyrics and music as a package she does have "soul" you can here it in her singing and lyrics..but she has a higher profile because of her drug habits and her talent and the fact of her colour...but that's always been the case ...taxi for elvis Da, Da, Da....Emancipation....Free..don't think I ain't..! You just confirm what I said earlier... We have different way to judge artists... if you think Steve Winwood and Ray Charles are the same, good for you... The meaning of "Soul Music", is music that comes from the soul...so, I guess what your saying is that only black people have souls. I can understand why one would take that as a racist statement. For me, it really doesn't matter what color one is, just as long as what they are saying or singing for that matter, has an effect on me.
