Jennifer Hudson - The Music Critics' Comparisons Continue

Allmusic's most recent blog entry talks some about Jennifer Hudson's upcoming debut album and compares her to the late Phyllis Hyman. She's been compared to Whitney Houston, Jennifer Holliday, Aretha...and she's not even released an album yet. How can anyone even live up to those sort of (premature) comparisons? Granted, the comparison here is with the material and not the artist.

Jennifer Hudson, “Spotlight” (Arista). Ne-Yo returns a favor — Hudson appeared on Because of You’s “Leaving Tonight” — by penning the first single from Jennifer Hudson, due in September. Thematically, the song is about a stifling relationship, not fame, and while Stargate-produced midtempo melodrama is nearing the brink of overabundance, the Norwegians’ backdrop here is ideal, a low-key but subtly powerful groove for Hudson to reintroduce herself without doing the expected. She almost goes all-out during the bridge, never quite belts it out, doing only what is necessary for the song. It’s all very Phyllis Hyman, and that’s a good thing — maybe the best thing possible (and it’s wholly appropriate that Hudson is on the same label that released some of Hyman’s best and most successful albums). If taking time to “get it right” entails this level of quality throughout the album, the long wait will be very much worth it.

By the way, what is she doing now? haven't heard much about her since Dreamgirls. Spike Lee had such high hopes for her as for the movie scene.

Based on what? This is what I'm getting at. Just as a critic comparing her to other before her is premature, so is this sort of dismissal. How can you sum up her worth as a music artist when she's not yet released an album and has thus far been in two movies?

She is getting press and let's face it....she should have been forgotten about not long after her Oscar win. The fact that she is being talked about this much can't be a bad thing. She probably has a really good publicist helping her out.
