Billboard Hot 100 -06.07.08 - David Cook :11 Hot 100 Debuts - - Top 200 Albums: 3 Doors Down #1, Donna Summer #17 >>>>>Season seven "American Idol" champion David Cook will set a record for debut entries on the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Digital Songs tomorrow as 11 titles enter the former, while 14 songs jump on the download tally. The onslaught is led by a No. 3 Hot 100 start for his original recording "The Time of My Life," which shifts 236,000 downloads to easily take the No. 1 spot on Hot Digital Songs.
"Idol" runner-up David Archuleta lands three songs on both charts, led by his cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" (No. 36 Hot 100, No. 16 on Hot Digital Songs, 71,000). Cook's takeover of the Hot 100 shatters the mark for debuts set by Miley Cyrus (as Hannah Montana) in the Nov. 11, 2006, issue, when she placed six new titles on the list. The 11 songs on the chart are the most in a week by any artist in the Nielsen Music era, which began in December 1991 when the chart converted to Nielsen BDS and Nielsen SoundScan data. His haul also marks the most placements on the list since the Beatles charted 14 songs on the Hot 100 in the week of April 11, 1964. How come NIN's Ghosts is there but not The Slip?
for Donna Summer! Mariah didn't fall off the way someone previously implied (or hoped). Janet's almost out completely How did I sleep on the Sarah McLachlan release? Don't know about 75% of the people up there. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Donna's debut proves there's hope for the older divas to make a move.
She almost bested debuts by Diana Ross ("I Love You" debuted at No. 16 in 2007) and her fellow Burgundy label mate Chaka Khan ("Funk This" at No. 15).

This one will struggle to 400,000 in the next few weeks and be done. Whats next for her? A good single and a tour might help push it up a bit (at least back into the Top 50 or so). I'm happy about Donna's debut and hope it doesn't drop like a stone next week. I realize a "hit" single might not happen, but would have hoped that "Stamp Your Feet" could have at least cracked the Top 100 after appearing on that heavily watched shit fest AI.

I think they all did about the same number and also Joni Mitchell did about the same or a little more first week out, i think its safe to say this record will move 100-125,000 overall in its run. I think people forget that when a record falls off the chart it still sells, great example would be Hall & Oates record "Do it for Love" this album went gold despite only about a 2month or so run on the charts never getting into the Top 40, but based on its two AC chart toppers the record moved steady every week, going gold about 3 + months after its run. When did this album of Hall and Oates come out? I mean, can albums do that kind of slow selling now of days? I wonder if stores have that kind of patience. Usually they give the heave ho to anything sitting around too long and not selling, so it never gets that chance to become a slow burner. Of course, online, most albums can sell forever. Also, seems like albums go out of print faster and faster, too. The consensus seems to be that if Donna's album sells in that 100-125 range for a smaller "bouquet" label like Burgundy (which is certainly pushing the album in their own way with promotional appearance and good internet advertising (although no flashy video...only her pretending to sing in a studio). I wonder if it can truly do that considering our fast paced world that does not let albums grow. [Edited 5/29/08 16:43pm]

[Edited 5/29/08 16:43pm] I think it can, plus with alot of older artists, alot of them have websites and release on their own label, so many of their fans get the cd from them, and none of that is ever tracked, though it could be since, its the same thing as downloading from iTunes. The Hall and Oates record was from 2002, it spawned the title track "do it for love" and "forever for you" both were HUGE AC chart hits, this was before downloading really kicked in so if this was out now, these two songs would be Hot 100 hits in some capacity, many people sleep on the AC chart, but its almost better you get AC play since that is the "forum" that is buying cd's, the 30+ plus crowd. Another good example of this would be "return to paradise" from STYX, this was a live record back in 1997 with the original lineup, that had 4 new tracks on it also, this went gold and was on CMC records, it also only charted for about 2 months or so, never getting past 100 on the top 200. But like you said the slow burn cant happen now with retail because there is no "retail" anymore. The death is the music store is a HUGE part of why artists are lucky to sell 100-200,000 of a record, you cant sell it if theres nowhere to stock it. Unlike the transition from Album/Tapes to CD's, the transition from CD to digital "faceless" downloading, is pretty much a disaster for the most part. I bought the album as an MP3 from Amazon (and the Circuit City edition from the store, which I'm sure counted). Wonder how that works in the tally? [Edited 5/29/08 17:08pm] Online sites count, well at least Amazon does and iTunes. But artists own sites dont count, but some day they will have to, because more and more artists are going indie and really dont want to have to go through the "red tape", so its not really that difficult to get the science working and have it counted, if they can take "faceless" downloads at iTunes as legit, than they can take an indie owned website as legit, since it has a more accurated database "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Not sure if you know what Burgandy is, but it's basically a smaller part of Sony. So it's not indie, really. Just small yet still "major". A great place for people like Donna, Chaka and even Gloria Estafan is on there now (not sure if she is thinking of releasing an English album there). Oh, and sorry....I just noticed that my question was up in your post, so it might be hard so see.
