I’ve learned a bit about new artists or material from artists I like but just haven’t gotten around to here on the Org. I can understand that popular artists get the bulk of posts and responses here but the few times I’ve started threads on artists outside of the Top 40 market they tanked so I don’t bother anymore. It’s easy to post in threads on popular artists because people actually respond. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

There's loads of new music that is amazing! Those who deny this don't have an open mind for anything new.....my dad is like that!

It's not going to change. People come here for different reasons; some to talk about new, some to talk about old, some to bitch about both. I prefer to talk about classic music, and some of my threads bomb, too. I hit on some new music threads as well - some do well, some don't.
This forum is just like any other; if it's a popular topic, people will respond. If it's not, it'll likely get relatively little attention. It's not a niche forum.

But WHY are some of those people popular (still popular, have careers at all, etc.) is what I want to know. ...says the guy with Adam Ant as his avatar? New Wave pop star!
I do agree with you, but in the end I have to admit that one of Prince's hats (along with musician, innovator, genius) is "pop star." So he's a peer of Jimi, The Beatles, Miles, and Janet! [Edited 5/27/08 11:23am] My Legacy

Dude, I hardly ever venture in here because it's 99% threads about mainstream American R&B and pop artists.
But you know what? Who cares? I talk about the music I like with others that like it...that just doesn't happen to be on prince.org...but that's just fine with me.

[Edited 5/27/08 11:23am] Yeah but you know what? I'll take one Adam Ant thread over 15 Madonna threads. In fact, when was the last time you saw a thread about Adam Ant? Yeah, he was a Pop star, but he fell from grace. But how often is that discussed? I can deal with Prince as the pop star, but his music has inspired so many people, as well as non-pop stars. And like I was saying before, there's other music to talk about too outside of the pop stars. I'd like to see more of that. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

NWF said: There's other great music out there to discuss, you know. Seriously, I have yet to see people raving about music by the Mars Volta, Foals, Amadou and Miriam, Seymour Bits, or Georgie James. They may not sound like the folks some of you worship, but it may hit you in a different way if you gave it a chance.
Seriously though, all these damn Madonna, MJ, Janet, Britney, George Michael, and whoever else you like threads are becoming annoying a repetitive. Let's talk about some new and undiscovered artists. Or let's talk about some other genres like Punk, Metal, New Wave, Reggae, Soca, Trip-Hop, Ska, Afro-Beat, etc. Maybe I'm generalizing or whatever, but I've been coming here on this forum for 5 years to explore new sounds and find out what everyone else is digging. But lately I've been seeing people either on nostalgic trips or raving about their favorite pop tarts. I know about these Pop acts already. And they're not bad either, but there's more stuff out there to dig too. I agree and Mars Volta are amazing by the way! It is disgusting with all the pop spam - you have a decent cool topic it is blasted all the way on page 5 in a few days. Very odd "Prince Fans" love all this pop?

I'm an even bigger fan of their old band, At The Drive-in. But sadly you don't really see too many threads pop up about how amazing this band is. It's like, people come on here and complain about how shitty today's music is, yet bands like these go over their heads. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Sometimes I feel like they're too meandering though and sort of schizo. I've never seen them live though. I've heard they're pretty great live. In fact, the person I'd like to move their focus away from pop stardom the most is Prince. I want him to realize he's a peer of Miles & Jimi & Zappa, and not so much Janet & Beyonce. For some reason he seems to value pop stardom as much as actual music. That made more sense when he was younger, but then his music was more daring then, paradoxically. If he'd move away from it, maybe the fans would, too. [Edited 5/28/08 12:50pm] My Legacy

Stop bitching and do something about it, you think you're the first to create a thread nobody responds to?

I agree with you NWF. But Prince built his career by making easily digestible pop friendly music, and as most people's musical tastes never change much, it's par for the course.

But guess what, Prince is a musician FIRST and pop star SECOND! He has created a very rich and diverse body of work that many many people happen to like. And Prince has fans of all kinds and of many different audiences. With that said, there should be a diverse mix of music to be discussed in regards to that. Ya know, an alternative to the music forum, is the music blog, there are tons out there dedicated to all kinds of music obscure. I personally go to a bunch of Punk related ones. The cool thing is that they also have the option to download MP3s. If you can't find one you like, start your own & maybe people can respond to that.
