It's kind of sad that Clive Davis try so hard to promote Whitney as a pop artist that he never allow her vocals to be use on a serious funk track.

When I say "serious funk track", I mean Clive should have pay Rick James, Roger Troutman, Larry Blackmon, or even Kool & The Gang to give Whitney at least 2 uptempo tracks for her debut album.

He's an old money hungry troll but I don't completely blame him because she was a grown woman and had a mind of her own (supposedly). She could have easily put her foot down if he was making her do something she didn't want to do because she had several music connections in her own family such as Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick that could have helped her get a deal somewhere else if he dropped her. Not to mention, that she had already previously recorded with Jermaine Jackson and Teddy Pendergrass. Little miss goodie goodie wanted to do weak shit because she wanted not only the black sales, but the white sales, the kid sales, and the senior citizen sales. She was the all American "girl next door" that rings your doorbell and asks to borrow a cup of sugar. Oh, she makes me sick. lol

She should have got with Prince or Rick and let them give her some hard funk and dress her up like a hooker. Well, the hooker part wouldn't look too good on her though with those chicken legs she has. lol

It's a little different then this version, it's not as hard as the album version IMO.

Vainandy,I am demanding that you go listen to "Thinking About You".I really think this is one Whitney Houston song that you will like.I wouldn't exactly call it "funk" but it's definitely not like her other pop-styled hits. It's straightforward R&B produced by Kashif....similiar to the stuff he gave to Evelyn King.

To be honest, her influence did so much damage to music in the late 1980s that, even if she made a straight up hard funk track, I don't think I could listen to it with an open mind. It would be different if she were someone I had never heard of but I have heard of her and she's one I absolutely can't stand.

Oh and I got mixed up with the giggle. Whit mutters sexyily like she's kinda drunk "I don't know why I do it, I just do."

I love that part and I absolutely love "So Emotional" -- that's easily one of her best IMO.

BTW, the 12 of "SE" was released with that god-awful pic with Kevin Costner. It was the centerpiece of her performance in that movie-that-will-go-unmentioned.

I think you're confused again. "So Emotional" was a single off her second album, Whitney. The Bodyguard was 5 years later.

It's an OK song, but then again I found most of Kashif's production work a little stiff. I wouldn't even call "Thinking about You" a midtempo song (and it definitely has no semblance of funk in it), but more in the vein of the conservative R&B made by mid-1980s acts of the Hush Productions stable (Freddie Jackson, Melba Moore, Lillo Thomas and Meli'sa Morgan), Kashif, etc.

I guess everyone's mileage is different. My idea of "mid-tempo funky" is L.T.D.'s "Every Time I Turn Around (Back in Love Again)." Whitney Houston's "Thinking about You" comes across as rather sedate and ... well, not conducive to dancing.
