All this is, is "A Woman Needs Love", by Ray Parker Jr, with different words. I guess he can do that since he was the writer of both tracks.

This may sound crazy but I actually prefer New Edition's early music, the stuff they did before they hooked up with Jam and Lewis for 'Heartbreak'.I guess you would call it "bubblegum",lol, but it was good bubblegum.

"Mr.Telephone Man" is a great song music

Same here. I hated the stuff they did with Jam and Lewis. It had a Minneapolis Sound but it was a mellower, weaker version of it kinda like all that slow stuff they produced for Alexander O'Neil or "Human" by Human League. It wasn't strong hard stuff like "Just Be Good To Me" by The SOS Band or "Control" by Janet Jackson. New Edition's first two albums (especially the first one) had a Jackson Five feel to them.

I thought I was the only one who felt this way lol I didn't really care for 'Heartbreak' at all.I dig the first two New Edition albums, and songs like...

"Is This The End?"
"Popcorn Love"
"Candy Girl"
"Jealous Girl"
"She Gives Me A Bang"
"Cool It Now"
"The Kind Of Girls We Like"
"Lost In Love"
"My Secret (Didja Get It Yet)"
"Mr.Telephone Man"
"A Little Bit Of Love (Is All It Takes)"

music those were their best songs imo.

Yeah, back in the day, I bought the 45s "Candy Girl", "Is This The End", "Jealous Girl/Popcorn Love", "Cool It Now", "Mr. Telephone Man", and "Lost In Love". I also bought the 12 Inch single of "Candy Girl".

A few months ago, I bought the first New Edition album on CD. I wish I could find that second album because I want the song "My Secret".

I remember hearing all the hype beforehand about Jam and Lewis producing New Edition's album in the late 1980s and getting excited. That is, until I heard the first song on the radio, being disappointed, and not buying the album. And I absolutely hate....you don't hear me....HATE.....the song "Can You Stand The Rain". lol

I agree with Soul and vainandy. I was never a huge fan of NE, but as time passed I came to appreciate their older material, esp. the self-titled album containg the song this thread is about.

I never saw what was so great about the Heartbreak album. I think it really stemmed from the fact their success stalled after 1985, so the album was almost like a "comeback" in some way.

I like old and "new" New Edition. The bubblegum stuff was great ("Popcorn Love," "Cool It Now," and "My Secret" are my favorites from that era). I also loved the Johnny era, with "If It Isn't Love" and "You're Not My Kind of Girl" standing out the most. Hell, I even like their covers of "Earth Angel" and "Blue Moon." lol

As far as the older songs go, "Mr. Telephone Man" has a lot of nostalgia for me and I still like the song, but it's not one of my favorites. And "A Woman Needs Love" is better. hmph!

For lack of a better description, I mostly like their poppin' b-boy schitt from the first 3. Is there anything hot like that on the remakes album?

Personally, I say to each his own regarding New Edition's "Heartbreak." It was the act's best album and was the spreingboard to the members' post-NE solo efforts. That's nearly as hilarious as someone saying Alexander O'Neal's music was "weaker" than The S.O.S. Band's music (I guess Vainandy had never heard "Fake," "Innocent," "Criticize," "Every Time I Get Up" and "Somebody").

I'm also not getting the statement that New Edition's career "stalled" after 1985, when "All for Love" was a platinum album and their obligatory contract-eating album "Under the Blue Moon" also went gold (not common for such novelty albums).

falloff Cinnie, you're funny. They gave the songs a little N.E. flava, but "Duke of Earl" and "Blue Moon" are still "Duke of Earl" and "Blue Moon." It's OK for what it is, but it's not a great album by any stretch.

By the time that album was released in 1988,I was getting tired of the Jam and Lewis sound.Their productions began to sound the same.Maybe that's why I prefer the earlier NE stuff. The first album is like The Jackson Five updated with an early 80s sound.I liked it alot!

The first album has a few cuts I like, but it was too J5-ish for me in 1983.
As far as Jam and Lewis, I think that's also why I didn't get into Heartbreak. Along with the comeback factor, Bobby releasd Don't Be Cruel on the same day as and it was produced by the "new" J&L which was L.A. and Babyface, so both albums played off of each other well. The difference for me was that I actually liked Don't Be Cruel.
