confuse "all the things going on in dance,soul"....like what? lol For the most part, today's music is predictable and uninspired.I think it's impossible to make a mindblowing, groundbreaking album in 2008.With that in mind,I think Donna made the best album she could possibly make (I feel the same way about Madonna's latest).

sure, modern soul and dance music are pretty dull. BUT. they're a lot more interesting than most of this. it all sounds so dated. and not in a retro way. more like recorded one song every year for the last 12 years and put them all on, as-is, without updating them. lol

there are a few tracks that sound great. and there are a few tracks that don't have stupid/annoying lyrics. and some each are the SAME tracks, but overall this album is a huge let-down for me.

just my opinion, of course. she probably would have been better off just making a straight-up dance album instead of making a (dance-)pop album. shrug

To be honest, when I first heard that she was finally making a new album,I was kinda hoping that she would just do a straight-up dance album....like Cher's 'Believe' CD...something aimed squarely at the dancefloor,to get her foot back in the door.Dance music fans make up her main audience anyway.I'm satisfied with the results, though.

i would also recommend it, it's brilliant.

it's terribly difficult to release a full dance-album because especially in the us, that market is very small.
who, in general, will buy full-dance albums in the US?
mainly gays or the club-people, and that market is too small for nice sales figures.
if you want full dance-albums with disco-touch buy kristine w or gloria gaynor or albums from club-diva's

this is a pop-album, no disco or dance, and it seems like the people like it because it's already going up the charts

Does anyone know anything about a song called "Run With It"? This song appeared on an early tracklist but apparently,it was replaced by "Fame (The Game)".

Sadly, I didn't like as many songs as I hoped or expected so I downloaded a few. The songs I like, I really like so they'll be added to my regular playlist.

Madonna isnt really "from" Bay City, Michigan. She was born here though. She grew up in Rochester Hills, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit).

I'm hoping that is what the follow up is. "Well, I made an album of different kinds of songs and it was something I always wanted to do but I want to come back to the dance floor!"

I no major problems with this album, though. With the exception of "Stamp", "I'm A Fire", the title track, nothing is a perfect 10 but there are a lot of 7s, 8s and 9s. I think the hip hop beats on the JR Rotem tracks are too blah though and do little for her (and "Mr. Music" is soo Disney!). I also don't mind "Slide Over Backwards". Yes, its a kind of annoying "character study" but the music and singing is pretty hot. If you like "I'm A Fire", get the addition with "It's Only Love"....It's not as catchy as "I'm A Fire" but very similar music (same writers/producers of course). The lyrics are sort of a free form poem...It just rambles but it's cool.

After listening to it (while being very sick most of the week and not being able to do much out there in the world), I like every track at least a little but the very best tracks are "Stamp your Feet", "I'm A Fire", "Science of Love", "Bring Down the Reign", "It's Only Love" (CC and import bonus track) and my very favorite might be the title track, "Crayons". It has such a bouncy energy.

It would be cool to see her go into the studio with just one dance music producer and do the entire album with him.You know....like Madonna did with Stuart Price on 'Confessions...'.I'd like to see her do a total dance album.Moby recently expressed interest in producing her,but she apparently told him that she's trying to get away from dance/disco confused She wants to do all styles of music and that's fine, but I really think a straightforward dance album, aimed at the clubs, would be amazing.Look what it did for Cher.

THAT WON'T WORK, THE DANCE-MARKET IS TOO SMALL TO GET GOOD SALES.
THE CHER-THING WAS JUST A GOOD MOMENT IN TIME WITH A SUPER-HIT BELIEVE.
THE OTHER SONGS FROM THAT ALBUM AREE PRETTY MEDIOCRE.

AGAIN FULL-DANCE ALBUMS ARE PRETTY MUCH AIMED AT THE GAY OR CLUB-MARKET AND THAT WILL NOT SELL A LOT OF UNITS.

AM ALSO PLAYING DONNA'S NEW ALBUM NOW.
FAME (THE GAME) IS VERY COOL STUFF.
SHE SINGS ABOUT LUBE-JOBS, BOOB-JOBS BOTOX AND PAPARAZZI.

but let's be honest....a new Donna Summer album isn't gonna be a massive-seller anyway,no matter what type of music she does. This isn't about sales, though,it's about re-connecting with the audience that cares about her the most (dance music fans). And I disagree that the dance music market is too small to sell alot of units.Madonna's last album 'Confessions On A Dancefloor' (aimed at the same audience that would support Donna) sold close to 10 million copies worldwide.

Just judging from the stuff I have heard or heard samples of from "Angel", that was shaping up to be a good, possibly mostly dance albums. You probably know of more tracks but off the top of my head:

You're So Beautiful
I Got Your Love
Andoani (sp?)
Only Words
Valleys of The Moon (?)

That was sounding mighty fine and it had an obvious ballad with "Only Words", which was kind of urban AC. I wouldn't mind a few ballads. Although I really like "Any Way At All" (more than "Melody Of Love"), I suppose that kind of big Diane Warren-esque ballad is out of date. Again, I love this album, but it might be cool to give us something more like what she had been doing before. I know that sounds bad..."Why can't you repeat yourself?" I'm not thinking disco, but the stuff she was doing in the nineties and later. I guess I could make a whole album's worth of that material myself, though, and put it on my MP3 player.

As for the comment on "She Works Hard For the Money", the album...Two great hits (title track and "Unconditional Love", which I like a lot but not everybody does) along with a classic ballad that builds into a dance groove ("I Do Believe I Fell In Love"), which is maybe one of her best album tracks. That being said, lots of only passable lite/Christian pop filler and "Woman"....holy shit. Talk about setting the women's movement back by years! I know I'm alone in this, but I much prefer the very guilty eighties pop pleasure of "All Systems Go". It sounds very 1987, which is one of my favorite years in music.

David, how would you rank the studio albums (with or without IAR)? I would need to give this some thought myself but I think She might be on the bottom. Let me think....I decided to add the live albums and Christmas Spirit, too.

Bad Girls
Once Upon A Time
Four Seasons Of Love
Crayons
The Wanderer
I'm A Rainbow
I Remember Yesterday
[Live and More]
All Systems Go
Love To Love You Baby
[Christmas Spirit]
Another Place and Time
Mistaken Identity
[Live and More Encore]
The Hostage
A Love Trilogy
Donna Summer
She Works Hard For the Money
Cats Without Claws

Changed my mind on best and worst. The last section of "Once Upon A Time" is kind of no thrills while "Bad Girls" is more consistently good with no filler. "Cats Without Claws" has it's moments but no tracks as great as "She.." or "I Do Believe...". I put "Crayons" pretty high up there, but maybe since it's new. I'm really impressed with it (but keep in mind, that is with "It's Only Love").

I figured around 2005 when she released "I Got Your Love" as a stand alone single and had the samples of the 3 above tracks on her site that here was a strong possiblity of releasing "Angel" or all of those tracks in some way, shape or form. When she signed a contract with Burgundy for a something totally new (although she first hinted there might be covers on here...thankfully that did not happen) I figured she would hold on to those tracks and go into the recording studio since Burgundy was probably not interested in older recordings.
