Sunday Night/Night Music/After New Years - Sanborn, Bootsy, Marcus Miller, D'angelo, Eric Clapton, etc.

...

Man, I wish this show still came on! I was always right under the TV around Midnight on Sundays on NBC! originally running from '88 -1990, Dave Sanborn would host Musicians from across the spectrum playing together with a killer house band: Marcus Miller, Hiram Bullock, Omar Hakim, and Phillipe Saisse..On the first show, Co-host Jools Holland said "Set your VCR's folks"...as if they knew this wasn't gonna last.....

They tried to bring it back in the mid-90's, with guests like Eric Clapton, D'angelo, Cassandra Wilson, and Isaac Hayes, but it didn't get picked up....

Guests over the years included artists like Miles Davis, Sting, Dizzy Gillespie, Bootsy Collins, Sonic Youth, Sun Ra, James Taylor, Boz Scaggs, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Todd Rundgren, Take 6, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Al Jarreau, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Abbey Lincoln, Milton Nascimento, Pat Metheny Group, NRBQ, Was Not Was, Jean Luc Ponty, Taj Mahal, etc....

Here's a handful:

Man I used to LOVE this show. They also used to run short clips of cats like Coltrane, Roland Kirk, and Jimi. Some of the best episodes I've seen were w/ Bootsy, Rufus Thomas, Nona Hendrix, and Miles. I remember the Chili Peppers went on there and played a piece of "Back In Black". There were rumours of these shows coming out on DVD but there were some legal problems.

That shit was the BOMB! Me and the homies used to peep it all the time. I remember when they had Shinehead on there and he rocked "Come Together". Didn't Jules Holland do a similiar show after that in the UK?

I had Jools Holland on BBC Prime on my cable for some time and enjoyed it a lot. There was also a great show on TV5, a French TV station called Taratata with many great artists playing there worship. They didn't have a houseband, but the artists performed together as well. They lated had it also on Italian television, but this one wasn't nearly as good as the French one.

Add me to the list of folks who watched this show faithfully on Sunday nights! It still represents one of the best, if not THE best, music shows ever on television. I have some video somewhere of some of them. There were always acts that you NEVER would see anywhere else.

At the time I found this, the source indicated that some time ago there were tentative plans to release the Night Music/Sunday Night episodes on Broadway Video which would explain the "Compilation" headings.

The only thing even close to this show in recent history was a series called Studio Jams.
Each episode chronicled a group of known instrumental musicians (that don't normally play together), selecting/rehearsing and then recording material.

For an example of how "out" the performances might get, there's a clip here featuring Todd Rundgren, Michele Gray & Taj Mahal singing (with musical accompaniment including David Sanborn & Pat Metheny) Never Mind The Why And Wherefore from the Gilbert & Sullivan comic opera H.M.S. Pinafore.
