I finally bought the CD.
This album is great!!! If she manages to get the attention of Radio and gets some airplay, we could finally see a bonafide comeback! "Rocking Chair" is so far my favorite. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory! | |

Well, I'm glad you guys are digging it, but I have to say this is the most frustrating album I've ever heard. The production is annoying as hell. Even when Cyndi's done her part well, such as writing a great song like "Grab A Hold", her work is undermined by the cheap and embarrassing production. Compare the live versions of that song with the official version here. It's a joke.
Then you've got songs which have great sections sitting alongside disappointing ones, the best example being "Into The Nightlife" which has an ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT chorus following lame minimalist verses. If the whole song was like the chorus then it would be the best single of 2008 by a mile, but instead it's the most frustrating..... "Set Your Heart" has great verses, but someone should have told Cyndi to rewrite the chorus. That whole "yooooor heart" thing sounds awkward. A clue that the chorus needed to be rewritten can be found in the title alone. The phrase "Set your heart" just sounds wrong and makes no sense. And of course, the production of the song is cheesy anyway..... Oh, and this album also contains the worst song of Cyndi's career, "Give It Up". The only song here that would go on my ipod (if I had one) would be "Lay Me Down" which is brilliant all the way through (not just in sections) and doesn't feature production that makes you want to pull your hair out. It's the interplay between the riff and the melody that has such power. They know they're onto something and they don't sabotage it with unnecessary changes. "Lay me Down" is a worthy addition to her catalogue. Funnily enough, the Basement Jaxx produced "Rocking Chair" is probably the only song that feels totally finished. It's not my cup of tea, but it's perfect for what it is. "Same Old Fucking Story" has grown on me since I first heard her do it live, and like "Lay Me Down" it maintains it's momentum all the way through, although it's still not my cup of tea. I could go on, but I don't have all day. Next time I talk at length about this, it will be to say why she's been forced to take this direction. That will be an interesting discussion. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

What a wonderful contribution you've made to the discussion. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Ya gotta love this acapella version of "Same Old Fucking Story" though. I should be in America now catching some of these great gigs. Ahhh well, maybe next year.

I'm still waiting to hear what some of Cyndi's usually quite vocal org admirers think of the album. voicescarry? ehuffnsd? sosgemini? Your silence is deafening. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”
