I agree. It has nothing to do with color for me either because I love me some Teena Marie, but Joss on the other hand just seems to be trying too hard. I mean some of her music is okay but her voice just annoys me to no end and I just don't buy that she's a real "soul" singer. It's not something that comes natural to her. It seems forced to me.

Totally.

It's definately not a color thing. Her voice isn't forced, it's her voice. But her range is so small it makes what she does sound forced. Because there's only certain things that she can do with it.

You too?

She`s one of the most soulful vocalists out there today.

Actually, she's really not.
She's more of a stylist than a vocalist.
Her range is very very small.
And she doesn't really know how to sing live as she loses her voice during EVERY SHOW.

Oh my god i am so glad people are seeing through her fake and phoniess her voice is not genunine whatsoever. I saw it when they overpromoted her Mind, Body, and Soul album there are thousands of soul singers who have better voice and vocals than her

Syleena Johnson and Heather Headley anyone!

She has no range or versatily and her voice lacks real substance. She has got to be one of the most biggest jokes during the UK British invasion. She is so trapped in her own hype.

You are right with her losing her voice during a live show i saw her during a festival and her background singers where really holding her. In my opinion they have better voices than her.

True. That's the difference between her and Joss. Teena voice in her prime had more fluency and it was natural unlike Joss which soul w/out feeling.

Then again, Joss is young and has all the time of te world to grow into her voice, so to speak. As long as she just does not over-try.

Teena was just surrounded by the right people at the right time ANNNNND, Joss grew up in a world where Whitney Houston was a superstar and music is syndicated.

Don't make an excuse for the music of her generation

Her youth is probably the only excuse that she has now but Teena Marie started when she was eight. Her age really has nothing to do with i have seen girls younger than her who are tapped into their own voice. For example Monica Arnold started when she was thirteen and she had songs like Before You Walk Out Of My Life and Why I Love You So Much she had so much soul and deliverly at such a young age her voice was not perferct but I felt her sincerity and power.

Joss Stone i don't feel that she is more manufactured and have this frontin image of of a soul sista diva she may a voice but her music is souless.

Big difference between her and Nikka. Neither one of them can even hold a candle to Teena Marie let alone find where the shop that sells the candles is even located. But at least Costa has bonafide "soul". She knows it so she's not turned out by it. She doesn't have to pimp it or be pimped out by it. And it doesn't dictate how she sings or acts. She never had that "Oh look at me...I'm special. I'm one of a kind." type of vibe Joss gives off. Nikka is way more natural with her shit. She's not caught up in the "non black girl who has soul" bag.

It is like the image of perfect happiness that is forced on ANY person living in this modern world, where women like Kate Moss are celebrated for starving themselves. Some, not all women tap into this from a young age and grow up trying to conform to a body image that is not healthy and/or their own.

The same goes for music. Sure, you can decided to tour small clubs, but what if you get whisked off stage age fifteen to make an album by a team of people that want to push you as a brand?
The music world is not perfect and not all the people have the talent to write their own material like Beyonce. So already you need people to get it together for you.
I just think Joss is a girl that got sucked in at a young age. Her voice is amazing, but what she puts into it is still the soul of a young girl. I still think that she COULD grow up to become a better soul singer. I rather have her dabble in pop a bit, though and find her own niche, instead of, indeed, pushing herself as a soul sista.
She just needs to find her own. I am more than willing to not write her off so quickly.

I keep hearing a LOT of good stuff about Teena's daughter. Has anyone heard anything by her?

Yup, she sure is. I wasn't all that crazy about Teena's last album though (especially after releasing the solid "La Dona" album) but her voice is still top notch. I read somewhere that she's coming out with a new album this year tho so that should be good. Definitely looking forward to that.

Agreed. Teena is more refined than both Nikka and Joss. However, Nikka like Teena both have a geniune approach.

Absoultely it seems like Stone is creating this image just to make some money and attention what makes her more non belivable is that she is really a posh girl but she is pimping this soul sista urban girl image.

There was an interview in local UK newspaper with Joss Stone saying that she just accidentally got into soul and decided to sing it. The reason why she became a soul singer was to pay for a horse named Freddy she said in a television interview. Which changed my whole perspective on her.

So in a sense she does not have the soulful natural callin aura we get from artists such Jill Scott, Goapele, Floetry and Erykah Badu who's music is filled with meaning and a philosophy that we can relate too.

I saw that James Brown duet too. What was impressive was that it was totally unrehearsed, and yes, she did pretty good. There is something there, but it's just buried under a whole load of nonsense. Even on the JB duet there were moments when she was giddy as hell, and running about the stage, all overexcited. Not professional at all.

Sadly, the ego-boosting lifestyle she's leading means she's destined to get more annoying as the years go by and never develop into what she did have the potential to be, i.e. a real contender. She would have always needed good guidance and the right surroundings to do that, and the chances of her ever getting it were always small. Now she's way too far gone. It's safe to write her off. I did it a while ago. She's done.

I saw her too and i saw her during a festival she was too giddy and had no stage presence she just skipped and jumped around like a rabbit and sounded like a broken record she kept on saying I hope you like it after every song and just force feed people and rambled on how Music is her real love and men are wussies.

Her background singers have excellent voices and I always wonder why are they in the back when they need to be in front. They are more natural than the girl they work for.

She can wear all the colorful funky clothes she wants she is not funky and unpredicatable like Nikka Around the time she was starting out the media were forcing us to like her and called her the soul voice of the 21st century.

Her age has nothing to do with it

American Idol contestants are better than her look at Paris Bennet that girl is amazing! She is younger than her by a couple of years she was a pure natural. She was a underrated contestant but put her next to Joss and blow her out like next year. They don't give her the credible music material
