There is nothing deep to it. I've been an old soul all my life. Of course I know the difference between a Curtis and a Robin. I dig his music. More than that I dig what he has to say because most of the words to his songs, I've lived. I'm not calling the guy the best thing since sliced bread.
I hear you. I think the song is lame and sounds like a lot of other songs done 30 years before it. That's all I'm saying

BlaqueKnight said: R3V said: [Edited 5/16/08 1:18am] Let me explain. This is in the vein of pop R&B artists who either sample or recreate old soul music almost exactly as it was 30 years ago but the vocals and lyrics are watered down. John Legend is guilty of this, Alicia Keys is guilty of this, several other are as well. I just think its shit. Take Mint Condition, Maxwell (when he's got something out), Anthony David, Angie Stone or even Anthony Hamilton (most of the times). They take R&B and do something original. Peep "These Are The Reasons" by Angie Stone - the instrumentation is organic - real drums, bass, guitar, organ, electric piano, strings. That song is R&B, uses the same instruments that were available in the 70s but doesn't sound like it was made 30 years ago. Maxwell's whole 1st CD - Urban Hang Suite is another example of organic R&B that sounds new but also has a timeless sound to it. I'm just sick of that gimmick of shit like what Thicke is doing - take several old songs, replay the parts but change them just enough not to get sued, copy Curtis's vocal arrangements, knowing that because you don't sound like Curtis, soul fans probably won't put 2 and 2 together until later on and people that don't know won't know. John Legend is guilty of this shit as well and Alicia has been doing it on her past couple of CDs but especially on this last one. Its a gimmick. Its McSoul. I'm just tired of it. That's what I meant by I completely disagree with you. I think the people taking soul and R&B in a newer, updated direction are far more interesting than people like Thicke, John Legend, Alicia, Duffy, and Joss Stone. What they are doing has been done and was done much , much better the first time when it meant something. Now its tribute, marketing and sales. McSoul. [Edited 5/16/08 11:25am] I disagree with you. Angie Stone has sampled music from the past in some of her songs, so has Anthony Hamilton. So how are they any better than Alicia Keys or John Legend? I don't believe for a second that me liking this single from Thicke is only me as "a soul fan who probably won't put 2 and 2 together until later on..." thats bullshit to me. You have your own strong opinions and I respect that, but I don't think people should be critized for liking whoevers music you consider to be "watered down". I know in every conversation there is going to be somebody negative, but good grief, at least respect others opinions about music. [color=blueI didn't criticize anyone's taste in music or what they like. I criticized the industry and artists who reuse old songs to gain popularity. I said Anthony Hamilton is original MOST OF THE TIME and I don't know what songs Angie has used samples of. For the record, Robin doesn't always do it either. "Lost Without You" was a great song, was original, and will probably be his marker song (like Purple Rain is to Prince). I just have issues with people who STEAL old songs and flip them and regardless to whether you like the song or not, that's what this is. Robin had a hit but he also had misses with that Pharrell song and that duet with Lil' Wayne. Its good that he chose a new direction but ripping off old soul songs ain't gonna cut it either. And yes, it is my opinion that it IS WATERED DOWN and I think anyone who has a TRUE appreciation for REAL SOUL music would agree. When all is said and done, I recognize old musical and vocal arrangements when I hear them and they are in this song. Its been done before. If you enjoy it, fine. Good for you. If I want to hear old soul music, I'll listen to the real deal.

It's that simple.. personally i don't hear anything special with this song... and trust me .. i won't listen to it again.. but i can give my opinion any time i want [Edited 5/16/08 23:46pm]

Love the song! When is the new album supposed to be out? "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

cha know, i've noticed that thicke's songs don't hold up well after repeated listenings...he creates killer hooks and melodies but doesn't flesh out his songs enough to hold up for the long haul...as much as i like the guy, i rarely listen to his albums.
i'm afraid he might end up like rufus wainright for me...a one trick pony. Space for sale...

I disagree. I still listen to When I Get You Alone off the first album and most of the second album. But I can admit I'm biased. i'm afraid he might end up like rufus wainright for me...a one trick pony.
