Go for Neil Diamond. I bought the last one (also produced by Rick Rubin and very stripped down acoustic tracks but never really go into it (not that it was bad but I never listened to the whole thing)...I'll have to give it a chance and might consider this one, too.

Yeah but she only did like 280K. Of the top three divas, Mariah debuted with bigger sales and she still maintained the top 4, lol.

That's Neil's first #1 album? Wow, that's something. Congrats to Neil Diamond, still in the game!

Rick Rubin produced this one, too.

HDD was way off:

Last week's No. 1, Madonna's "Hard Candy," falls to No. 3, shifting 94,000 -- with a not-so-sweet 66% decline. That's the third-largest second-week percentage drop for a No. 1-debuting album this year. DAY26's self-titled set (down 73% in its second week) and Janet Jackson's "Discipline" (down 68%) posted bigger erosions. Here is a quick rundown of 2008's No. 1 debuts and their sophomore-frame drops: Mariah Carey's "E=MC2" (61%), Leona Lewis' "Spirit" (54%), George Strait's "Troubadour" (65%), DAY26's "DAY26" (73%), Danity Kane's "Welcome to the Dollhouse" (62%), Rick Ross' "Trilla" (54%), Alan Jackson's "Good Time" (55%), Janet Jackson's "Discipline" (68%) and Jack Johnson's "Sleep Through the Static" (52%) (from Billboard.biz)

Yes! It's Rick Rubin!

He worked with him a few years ago for the much celebrated "12 Songs". This album had a lot of strong buzz but Sony really fucked up and apparently put some kind of spyware or something on the CD and they had to pull it off the shelves really early. This did not help sales, of course and by the time clean copies came out, people probably moved on. He got his number one, though, and good for him.

To xperience319, his hits include "Coming To America", "I Am, I Said", "Cranklin' Rose", "Sweet Caroline" (probably his biggest hit), "Heartlight" (from ET), and he wrote "I Saw Her Face" for the Monkees (may have sang it before them, too). Probably had other pop staples that just aren't coming to mind. He is really well known for big concerts (including bad glittery shirts) that entertain many middle aged women....I think my mom saw him in concert but it was probably when she was younger.

The Monkees song is correctly titled, "I'm a Believer."

He also wrote, "Red Red Wine" (UB40), "Holly Holy," "Kentucky Woman," and a lot of others.

I first saw him in concert in 1977. To this day, I have seen only two other people who were more amazing live - Prince and Bruce Springsteen.

Really? Not even "The Jazz Singer" (or do you think of that only as a soundtrack).

Genesia, thanks for the correction on the Monkees track. "Kentucky Woman" is a good track. "Love On the Rocks" is not a favorite but a signature track. He's got a ton.

Im still trying to figure how Neil Diamond isnt in the freaking RNR hall of fame, thought he was, but saw an article that he hoped to one day get the nod, what a fucking crime, there are bands/artists he wrote for that are in, and he's not? By the way the album is great, and whats with this Leona Lewis, worst record of the year by far, BORING shit, thats what happens when you let the USA mix a UK artist.
