Bon Iver - "For Emma, Forever Ago"

Has anyone heard this?

Singer-songwriter indie folk stuff really isn't my bag, but this is effing beautiful. It's got way more going on sonically than I was expecting. It's got enough adornments (with some muted horns, a few drum machine bits and multi-tracked vocals) to keep things from getting dull.

The subject matter is heartbreaking and beautiful. And the music helps to set that mood. I love this guy's falsetto. But all of the heartbreak and melancholy is softened by a sense of hope and optimisim, at least in the music (I haven't had a chance to dissect - or even make out - most of the lyrics yet.)

This is a really breathtaking album, and possibly, surprisingly, a contender for my favorite album of the year. If I can force myself to listen to it any more, considering how deeply it touches me right now (it's opening some wounds that currently have pretty thin scabs on them), it could possibly become one of my most cherished albums ever.

This is really gorgeous. Highly recommended!

Hey Rev- I'm going to maybe buy this album this weekend- I've read some great reviews and saw him on Jools Holland this week- I'm intrigued by his story and the conditions the album was made under...
