martina topley bird - "the blue god"

released today, this is her 2nd solo album, follow up to 2001's "quixotic"

has anyone got it yet? i got it today and i've been listening to it all day long.
it's summery and breezy and it's quite different for her. it's so poppy and
light compared to the "lovedreams in bombed underworld" that was "quixotic".

most notable difference is the faster pace of the songs. the beats seem to
wanna run away from her vocals which are still ethereal and dreamlike. the
songs, i guess are too earthly in a lot of places for her unworldly delivery.

there's a few quite brilliant moments on the album none the less, especially
the last track "yesterday" reminds me of her best work with tricky and some
of the stuff on her solo debut.

the overall feel this album gives me compared to quixotic is that this is a
night out in an underground club. it's all plush lights and beautiful girls,
drenched in russian ganster chique and there's a malicious atmosphere just
beneath the surface but it never shows itself too alarmingly. instead, the
world outside is still visible through the windows.

and that's where she kind of lost me. "quixotic" felt much more like a real
nightmare. like the backrooms of the same club, the cellar or the alley at
the back where dreams are shattered and the fancy imaginings of life are a
soft shimmer that glares over the despair of the bleak reality of the place.

on quixotic she sang like she was living it, on the blue god she sings like
she's a nightclub crooner on the stage, not in the mids of it, but with an
air of cool detatchment.

call me a depressed bastard but i prefer my martina singing like she's the
euredyce of the seedy british underbelly.

for seven years i waited for a follow up to quixotic,
and i guess i just expected more of the same. but it's
nice to have something diferent as well.
