Both are really beautiful. Of those, I prefer The Shirelles. Just a slight preference though. I also love Roberta Flack's version.

Both are amazingly beautiful in their own way but Carole King's is my favorite and her album TAPESTRY is a must have for any music lover!

Okay, I'm going straight off the radar here, but I like Frankie Vallie and the 4 Seasons version the best!

Shirelles for sure.
Carole had the concept but The Shirelles had the vibe. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

The Shirelle's for many resons: I virtually always prefer the original over covers; they were the group I grew up hearing sing this song; in general I like the 'girl group' sound and vibe....
But I also like Carole King's version, because she is able to put across the feeling of the song without it sounding contrived. "Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive."

The Shirelles version is the definitive one for me "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ
"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always

I like Tapestry but I too go with The Shirelles. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Absolutely. I grew up listen to this one on my mother's turntable... an old 45' Laura Branigan and Amy Winehouse made their own versions too... "America is a continent..."

the shirelles version for me as well. Carole King's take is very good, but I think the original was one of the best singles of the 60s - and I think the 60's was by far the greatest decade for singles of the rock era.
