David Ruffin's version of "I Want You Back"

I knew the song was written for another group, but I never knew another version had actually been recorded, until today:

Hate to say it, but that didn't work for me at all. The song just doesn't suit him. There was one great moment though when he did the high falsetto note on "All I NEEEED!" Apart from that, I think this stayed locked up in the vaults for a good reason.

Motown was ALWAYS recycling songs.

I know. I have heard so many versions of Where Did Our Love Go, My Girl, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, and Hum Along and Dance (just to name a few).

That was one of their many weaknesses and some of the covers weren't even good (the Supremes' versions of "Come and Get These Memories" and "Heat Wave" were WRETCHED, for example).

Marvin Gaye was one of the only Motown artists whose different versions of Motown singles by others (regardless if he recorded them first or not) were actually better than the "originals". So was Stevie Wonder ("For Once in My Life"). wink

Yeah, the Temptations "For Once In My Life" was pretty bad.

When I was helping out on the MJ book, "For The Record", I was suprised about how many Motown songs they had J5 cover. I'm talking Supremes, Stevie. Marvin, Temptations, Miracles, you name it. The list was long

Apparently, this version of IWYB is from David's unreleased 1971 album (which was finally released about 4 years ago.)
