And there is one thing you completely ignore - the fact that Acid Jazz was a movement. It wasn't just the music, it was a way of life. It had it's own scene, fashion, magazines, etc .. and the overall feeling of this movement was very positive, in a very unique way. ..

NO I didn't. You just chopped off the first part of my post that reluctantly acknowledged it as a cool trend.

Hah I spent a lot of time digging up those "ReBirth of The Cool" collections

Ok, coo, I just thought that a "cool trend" is selling it a bit short. lol

Yeah, "Rebirth of Cool" rocked. Especially since it was a transcontinental compilation series that included lots of jazzy Hip Hop like Gang Starr, Outlaw, The UMC's, etc .. that shit was dope!

Let's not forget about L.A.'s biggest contribution to Acid Jazz - the Solsonics! They started off as the house band at the legendary "King King's" in Hollywood, until they were signed to EMI and dropped their only album Jazz in the present tense.

I have a 1987 vinyl of `70s dancefloor jazz compiled by Gilles Peterson. Dude knows good music/talent when he hears it. His Worldwide compilations are still great... even the "old" ones.

True ... Gilles is the one who made it happen, and he's still around. smile

by the way... here was what was on that 1987 compilation.. i feel it is the very essence/foundation of the Acid Jazz sound

Side One
JOHNNY HAMMOND - Fantasy (6:06)

PLEASURE - Joyous (6:08)

PATRICE RUSHEN - The Hump (12:37)

Side Two
SIDE EFFECT - Always There (5:03)

BLACKBYRDS - Do It Fluid (5:25)

THE THREE PIECES - Concrete Jungle (5:19)

For real !
Giant step parties in NYC in the early 90s were Out of this world !
A weekly gathering of all the funk/groove loving people in town...the ladies were getting down..the dudes were beating bongos having a smoke, wink
drinking,dancing, laughing...It was the Bomb back then..pure positivity !
I dont know of any scenes quite like that anymore..

I agree to a certain extend. Most of the groups never made it beyond mimicry, but there are some who took it to a next level and greated their own, original sound. Galliano would be among those.

I don't even play Acid Jazz Records anymore, which is why I got excited about having a reason (the radio show) to dig out long forgotten records.

And there is one thing you completely ignore - the fact that Acid Jazz was a movement. It wasn't just the music, it was a way of life. It had it's own scene, fashion, magazines, etc .. and the overall feeling of this movement was very positive, in a very unique way. It brought people together. The energy at the parties I've experienced in the early to mid-90s is something that I will never forget, no matter if it was London, Hamburg, Los Angeles, San Franciso or Tokyo ... it's definitely a feeling that today's Funk scene lacks ..

That's one of my fave albums of the genre.

This is another one I used to run. Caught one of their shows and it was quite memorable.

Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Listening right now. This has been a great show.

The tune that was just played (at about an hour and 20 minutes in) really kicked ass.

Pari, what was that tune where the female was singing over and over towards the end "throw up my hands"? I couldn't exactly understand the words but maybe something about Runaway Soldiers.

Thanks. biggrin The tune you are talking about is Boundaries by Leena Conquest. Yeah, that's a nice track, always works on the dancefloor. I used to play it a lot 15 years ago, it was the first time since that I played it again. Ahhh, the memories.

I'll post a link to the download for the show within the next couple of days.

Kewl! Gotta find me a copy fo that tune. Was it any special mix that you played?

I found a 5 mix CD single with a radio edit, a full length version, a Tricky Remix, a 6 IN the Morning mix and an instrumental version.

That sounds like it should cover me but your mix was totally badass so I wanted to make sure I got the right one.
