Janet's "Can't B Good"...new single?

Just heard it when flipping around the dials on Sirius. It was playing on Heart and Soul, which tends to pick up on most of Janet's stuff. I like it, but I don't know if it will make waves. I thought "Rock With U" was a solid pop song...what happened?

Pop radio is not feeling Janet since the Superbowl. It's sad they didn't even test the single in most markets. "Luv" didn't get too much airplay either.

"Can't B Good" is a good urban ac hit and should do well.

True. Did they even touch "Feedback" as good as it was? I only heard it on R&B and dance stations. Fuck pop radio. I think at the end Virgin sort of realized this was the strategy...to go for R&B radio and let the songs hit there. Hopefully they won't bail, though. Let "Can't B Good" simmer for most of the summer and maybe try for another pop hit in the spring...try to get "Rock With U" back out there?

I think Janet's lack of airplay on pop radio has more to do with the fact that she's not young anymore and all of the music she's making is very urban-based, rather than straight up pop like it was when she was getting airplay. shrug

The Superbowl incident was a punch in the gut, but there are more important factors at play here.

Are there ANY 40+ female pop stars getting a lot of airplay?

After three albums in a row that didn't sell well,it's time for Janet to re-think her strategy.I can't imagine her going back into the studio next year to make the same kinda album again.

I see Discipline as a step in that direction. Even though it hasn't sold well, it's been generally well-received and pretty much everyone at agrees that it's at least an improvement on the last one, if not the last 2. I'm hoping she's not discouraged by the poor sales, and continues to really TRY to put out good product, instead of just throwing her hands in the air and giving up.

I'm *hoping* that Discipline is a first step in the right direction for her, because it really is a good contemporary pop/urban/r&b album. I think it's probably the best she could hope to do in this style of music. I'm just hoping she takes that success and moves forward with it and gets back to cutting edge pop music again.

Yes, Madonna. And Mariah, who is nearly 40.

Bottom line is Janet barely promoted her material, so what does she expect? You can't release a single in December and then do no promotion until the album release week. Major props to Madge and Mariah for having the business acumen to carry their projects.

btw, to answer the original poster... yes, this song was sent to one of the urban radio formats in mid-March. it's going to be promoted wider starting at the beginning of June.

It's a great song, but a totally inane single choice.

They fucked up on Luv by not even sending it to Pop radio (went for Urban adds only). Not even a video.

Rock With U was not promoted where it would have been a massive hit (Europe), though the video was amazing.

The single in June should be the tour lead-up single, which is obviously 2nite. Send it to all formats, make a hot summery video for it and you're set.

Singles for this project should have been:

1. Feedback (properly promoted, with an adequate video)
2. Luv (sent to all formats, with a video)
3. 2nite
4. Rollercoaster
5. Rock With U (if all of the above were hits, she could afford to take a risk and push something left-field at radio)

I'm really not sure what's going on with the singles from this album. It seems like in Feb and March they threw a bunch of tracks out there to niche radio formats to see what would stick, instead of having a real plan for a release schedule in place.

Come up with a plan. Stick with it. Don't throw every good track out there all at once and shoot your load early. Unfortunately, that seems like what they've done.

Well at this point they can still start over with my order at Luv, since they never sent it to Pop or Rhythmic (where it would actually HIT). smile

Yeah, Luv is definitely the strongest contender for a pop hit. Would be a perfect summer single. shrug

people keep saying janet's music "suck" but it doesn't... Radio is just not supporting it.. and half the stuff on the radio from what little memory i have of radio STINKS...

so janet's stuff is good compared to that crap... anyways i wish she would release "whats ur name" cause that song touches me.. just like Michael...

actually Can't be Good and What's ur name both remind me of MJ thats probably why i like them so much

janet has always made Urban RnB music.... what about her "janet" album.. Thats the way love goes, and again, I get so lonely, etc... she has always had some kind of Urban rnb music... but she does pop/dance as well...

and Rock with U is a pop song..... so its NOT because janet is making urban music.. cause if anything her albums compared to the average black artist.. is pop/dance

I like "Can't Be Good", though "What's Your Name" is better & of a similar tempo/feel. I wish they'd gone w/ that...

Dunno why "Luv" didn't catch on - did she do a video for it?? confused That song is CRAZY GOOD, I love it... & "Rock With You" is pure shit disbelief

Luv coulda shoulda woulda been a big hit. Same for Rollercoaster. All in all it's a great r&B/dance/pop album that should be churning out the hits effortlessly...

Yeah, they tried a risky strategy and it backfired. As a result, none of the singles went anywhere.

Come up with a plan. Stick with it. Don't throw every good track out there all at once and shoot your load early. Unfortunately, that seems like what they've done.

They also need to realize that what works for one artist may not work for another. This strategy is working for Mariah, but they should have used a different approach with Janet.

And yet I was listening to the radio and the woman was talking about how Janet's CD so far as sold 300k+, "but Mariah's...." At least that is the station that is playing Janet's stuff though!

"Luv" should have been as huge as Mariah's "Touch My Body"

With a video and the right promotion, it would have been a GREAT single...what a wasted hit..

Can't Be Good is one of the weaker tracks off the album in my opinion

I like "Can't B Good" as a song, but not as a hit single. Urban AC hits don't do much to sell CDs!

Considering what happened to Pink with both "U And Ur Hand" as slow burner and the return surprise of a track like "Who Knew", it's not impossible that these songs (both "Luv" and "Rock With U" or just one) could be pushed again later....hopefully.

I don't get what the big deal is about "touch my body".. that song is literally one of mariah's worst released singles... and her worst unmemorable number 1....

I know this.. that if janet came with that crap.. Touch my body.. . it would have gone NOWHERE and people would have called janet out for making something that stupid.. but its mariah.. and "she can't do NO wrong">..
