Review of Kanye West Concert

Sooooo, glad I didn't go see ANY of these fools live. I thought the review was an amusing read though. lol

http://www.guidelive.com/...1aa82.html

The key moment in Kanye West's show Thursday night at Superpages.com Center arrived when he crash-landed on a distant planet and met a female space alien.

"Of course we know who you are," the foxy alien told him. "You're the biggest star in the universe."

At least in his own mind he is. Mr. West has never hidden his raging ego, and during "Jesus Walks" he jokingly promised to "stop spazzing out at awards shows" – a nod to his boorish outburst after losing at the MTV Europe Music Awards.

But merely admitting a problem doesn't make it go away. As energetic and visually stunning as his one-man show was, it also felt like one long love letter to himself.

Not that fans cared. An adoring crowd of about 13,000 danced itself silly throughout the show.

Yet the concert lacked the emotion of his 2005 tour, when he meshed with a live band, complete with string section. This time, he was the sole figure onstage as he rapped over backing tapes for 80 minutes and pretended to be lost in space.

The intergalactic theme seemed hopelessly dated, considering E.L.O. and Parliament/Funkadelic were flying space ships into arenas back when Mr. West was in diapers.

At least the fog-covered moonscapes and glowing orbs were fun to look at – as was the rapper. He was a nonstop blur of jittery limbs and spastic foot work.

But he was clearly dancing with himself. Mr. West seemed aloof onstage – an all-too-typical stance for male rappers these days – and he's even gone so far as to bar the media from photographing him on this tour, lest they publish any unflattering photos. Lost in space, indeed.

The Barbados-born singer Rihanna preceded Mr. West with a 30-minute set full of choreography and costumes. She strutted onstage in tight hot pants – her back to the crowd so all could admire her derriere – and quickly changed into a form-fitting day-glo outfit.

Her voice had much less pizzazz. Rihanna's low-key singing may be better suited to clubs than 20,000-seat amphitheaters.

But what she lacked in lung power she made up for in range as she hopped from throbbing dance tunes ("Don't Stop the Music") to M.I.A.'s gangsta-flavored "Paper Planes" to her own infectious confection "Umbrella."

N*E*R*D preceded Rihanna with an equally far-ranging set. The trio expanded to a 12-piece onstage and journeyed from hyper drum duels to funk rock to a blistering remake of the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army."

Band member Pharrell Williams couldn't carry a tune, but the point was moot: When a dozen guys are pogo dancing in unison, who needs vocal dexterity?

Exactly. disbelief Performers are sooooo freakin' lazy nowadays. And seeing a rapper without a backing band is utterly pointless.

Well, having a band is not really the point in HipHop but I do understand you. However, I think that the drums in rap should always be made with drummachines, not live drums. Except for Questlove Ahmir Thompson, there are hardly any drummers that can create the BOOM of a drummachine.
Rappers being popstars is wrong to begin with.

And why is Kanye´s ego so big ? I will never understand that. He´s got a few decent songs but he can hardly be considered a true talent.

I don't get it either. Dude's released 3 albums but been talkin' like he's the Messiah since the first one. He's a good producer but I wish he'd go sit his ass down somewhere. His antics bore me. I couldn't imagine going to a show and seeing ONLY his ass for 80 minutes. shake

I went to the Dallas concert and let me tell you: The "Glow In The Dark" tour is a spectacle that I enjoyed 100%.

Yes, the whole story line (an entertaining touch, by the way) basically boiled down to being a testament to his ego. His "spaceship computer" was the feeding tube, spouting such things as "YOU Glow In The Dark" (...and I doubt that's referring to visuals) and letting Kanye know that he's basically the best thing the universe has to offer, but, honestly, I didn't mind; I don't go to concerts to judge how much the artist is feeling themselves because it's THEIR show and, well, it should be all about them! Knowing Kanye, the reviewer shouldn't have been surprised that the outcome came off twice as self-absorbed as the average artist's tour...

In terms of the actual performance, the fact that Kanye went through his entire set without one major costume change or lengthy break (except a quick water break on stage and the change into his "earthly clothes" at the tail end, jeans and a regular shirt, which made a minor difference) was impressive. Dude has energy for days and he put his all into each song, regardless of the results (which were usually very good). He sung, danced and acted his way through the show and his entertainer expertise showed through.

The set was a visual spectacular: Strobes galore, smoke machines and pyrotechnics, a rising center stage, and a wraparound video screen so well utilized that it alone created it's own hype. Each song had its own mood and individual set of effects and half of the fun was figuring out the characteristics each song's performance would have. The theme was loose but still effective (Kanye gets lost on a distant planet...how each song fits into that story line was clearly secondary to the visuals but the plot still managed to stick in my mind) and, frankly, I saw it as a strength, not a weakness, dated or not.

I will say that one tiny negative was that Kanye didn't go out of his way to interact with the audience outside of a few moments (the ending was particularly abrupt; he said a couple Thank Yous and disappeared so quickly, I didn't even notice when he'd left). With his collection of hits, many of the audience members remained heavily interested anyway (most were clearly fans).

The audience was hyped, just like the reviewer stated, adding to the fun. I didn't attend Kanye's last tour so I can't compare but I left satisfied with the "Glow In The Dark" tour. "Flashing Lights" (easily, my favorite song of his, and one of the best songs of last year), "Good Life" (best segment of the show), "Stronger", "Jesus Walks" and "Champion" are the songs I remember the best. Kanye also performed: "Good Morning", "I Wonder", "Spaceship", "Dear Mama", "Touch The Sky", "Heard 'Em Say", "Homecoming", "Gold Digger", "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" and a couple others I can't remember.

Bottom line: The concert was excellent and worth every penny ($95).

Oh, and Rihanna was better than I expected (she wasn't out of tune) but that doesn't say much considering she has a terrible voice that is simply not suitable for large-scale performances. Every word sounded like one long drone that never ended and, though I wasn't bored ("DSTM", "Pon The Replay" and "Umbrella" knock regardless), I didn't enjoy it either. She could have stayed home and I would have felt better listening to the songs of hers on my iPod rather than hearing her perform.

Thank you for adding that. Actually the band was behind the set itself, still on stage but out of the view of the public. The reviewer must not have heard Kanye say that outright at the end of the show...

Since this reviewer ended up spewing some hate, I would have liked it if they could have at least gotten their facts straight. hrmph

As for the band, most music reporters leave way before the end of a show so they can make press time, so if the band was out of sight and Kanye didn't mention it until the end of the show the reporter could easily not have known cuz they weren't there.

Thank you...I'm gonna go see it

No problem, and have fun (if you do end up going)! The show is going to meet your expectations.

I could have definitely written a better, more descriptive, and more objective review than the guidelive.com reviewer...this one up above served its purpose thumbs up!

FYI (for you, and everyone else who is/is thinking about going): DON'T FORGET to get your free copy of Kanye's new book on your way out of the arena. The workers will *not* try to get your attention. I know...I didn't receive a copy...
...extraordinarily opinionated...wink

http://www.guidelive.com/...1aa82.html

Kanye's response from his blog:

“Yo, anybody that's not a fan; don't come to my show. For what?! To try to throw yall to cents in? Yall rated my album shitty and now yall come to the show and give it a B+. What's a B+ mean? I'm an extremist. It's either pass or fail! A+ or F-! You know what, fuck you and the whole fucking staff!!! I know I shouldn't dignify this with a comment, but the reviewer threw a jab at all the artists. I just wanna know when was the last time you enjoyed yourself. If you can't have fun and loose yourself at this tour it's a good chance you're a very miserable person. I actually feel sorry for you guys. Your job forces you to not have fun anymore. Grab a drink, holla at some nice girls, and party bitch!!! You don't know shit about passion and art. You'll never gain credibility at this rate. You're fucking trash! I make art. You can't rate this. I'm a real person. I'm not a pop star. I don't care about anything but making great art. Never come 2 one of my shows ever again, you're not invited and if you see me... BOW!!! This is not pop, it's pop art! Chris Willman, kill yourself!”

Excuse you but that was in the newspaper, the link is right there in the post. whofarted Ummmm. . . and your comment makes no sense since the review your applauding, which I don't have an issue with, is exactly that, an "org review." rolleyes
[Edited 5/2/08 21:01pm]

Your P.O.V was clear in your comment before the article and the comments after that.

Yeah, cuz I'm allowed to have a point of view and it can also differ from yours and others. I don't like Kanye mostly because of his personality and I'm not a fan of his music. And the reviewer's assessment of the show further supported my opinion. I had a chance to go to the show and I'm glad I didn't. But you don't have to be a fan and enjoy an artist if a show is REALLY good and based on this guy's review it wasn't. I've since talked to several other people that went and are fans and didn't like it. So EVERY one is allowed a point of view. Furthermore, I haven't criticized anyone for wanting to go or having went. I just made it clear it wasn't for me. Is that okay with you? Is that still allowed? rolleyes

But your comment of not believing an org review still don't make no sense, since my post wasn't an org review and the one you were lauding was. So I guess what you mean is that if a review opposes your point of view it's trash but if you concur it gets clapping That's all I'm sayin.

disbelief Tacky, classless, idiot. . . This boy has all kinds of issues. BTW, this non-sensical tirade was directed at a writer from Entertainment Tonight who reviewed his opening night show in Seattle, not the writer of the review I posted which is from the Dallas Morning News. The EW review was actually milder (dude gave him a B+) than the one from the Dallas Morning News. I guess "Go kill yourself!" is his response to anyone who has a grain of criticism. rolleyes Kanye's a juvenile dumb ASS.

Girl, what is WRONG with him?

It's like every year it gets worse (?).

I'm used to hearing people in the music business get swelled heads and sorta cussin' folks out behind the scenes, but what's up with all his public antics? When he comes over here to Europe he shows out too, but not really grasping that people here aren't familiar with his backstory or his issuues or pain or whatever from home at all..With the exception of the UK audience, young folks are still learning to translate his English lyrics into their native languages here and have zero clue as to what it means to be humiliated because he could only afford to take his girlfriends to fast food once upon a time...shit, we JUST GOT KFC over here, for young kids that's a fun import to hang out at on the club strip -on a Friday night after the club as a teenager that'S THE SPOT to be. lol .

All in all, that just goes to say, what is wrong with him? He can't see anything beyond himself or anyone else's point of view? Hope that child has made some very sound investments in his future...because the game is changing daily and records cost too much money to make for any artist to be given carte blanche to act a fool these days. As long as he keeps delivering the number of units labels need him to, he's safe...but you never know when it'll taper off unless you stick to sanctioned, prescribed formula as approved by your bosses. Again, I trust that his mom, being the smart woman that she was, has him set up so he won't get a rude awakening financially should one of his recordings ever truly fail: lastly, when you read comments like his and see young folks behave in this manner...do you ever think it's time to re-instill the old adage in our social teachings that "Pride Goeth Before A Fall"...? These hateful ungratefull young people drive me up a wall these days stfu!!!

PEOPLE!

He specifically SAID he only got this pissed because they dissed the OTHER acts too. They are his friends, you know. And he's RIGHT - why can't they just sit back and enjoy themselves? Why do they have to nitpick a concert for fucks sake?

ALSO he never said "kill yourself"

I'm looking at his blog entry RIGHT NOW and there's no "kill yourself" there.

Someone's lying!

Ummmm. . . cuz that's their jobs. He must've edited it cuz it was there this morning, I checked his site directly after Jboogiee posted it. And his response was initially about him being offended that they rated him a B+ his mentioning of the other acts was secondary. Furthermore, why would ANYBODY have to lie on Kanye's triflin' ass. He does enough stupid, tacky shit in his own right that no one has to sit up and conjure up falsehoods. rolleyes So you defend this statement?

BTW, if you read the comments on his own site, one of the "fans" posted that they removed the comment. And if you do a search, there's people discussing the fact that he edited the post all over the net.
