let's appreciate "Night Shift"

I think I'd probably heard this song before, but it was on the radio and it totally captures marvin gaye's sound. At first I thought it was What's Going On, though I knew it wasn't and it sounded like a cross between that and Inner City Blues, but then I found out it was the commodores...I can't stop playing it!!

The commodores originally wrote the song about a female but after
marvin and jackie wilson's death that year the commodores rewrote the song in
dedication to them.

I absolutely love that song. Makes me think about people I have lost too. Love the production on it.

Actually, I don't think I've ever heard this cut. I've heard of it, but never had a chance to hear it. Gotta go search for it on YouTube

I love this atmospheric vibe from the song... that guitar and bass with lots of reverb... I get that same vibe from MJ's Human Nature...

I've always loved it. The song is a fitting tribute to two of the greats.

the funny part is that I was also on a night shift, so I could really feel the groove and intensity captured in the mood. The production is gorgeous.

I realize the song has great lyrics but I always hated the sound of the song. Too adult contemporary sounding.

The song is older than he is, and he is not that fond of anything after 1982 as far as doing his homework.

I was listening to this song just a few weeks ago. Nice track.

It's not like they play stuff like this on Finnish radio... and I don't even listen to the radio anyways lol
Besides, like Cinnie said, I'm not too fond of stuff made after the early 80's so I've had no reason to actively seek out this cut smile

That album is poor LOL. And you complain about good question? The album is painfully dated, which wouldn't bother me at all, but most the songs are weak.

But yes "lay back" is good. "Animal instinct" LOL. Need to hear the album again actually...

Trivia: Track "lighting up the night" (off the "nightshift" album), was later used as the title track to Jack Wagners second album. Love Jacks version, not keen on the Commodores one.

Yeah,it sounds dated now but I thought 'Nightshift' was a decent R&B album, for 1985 at least lol In addition to "Lay Back",I also like the song "Janet" which became the third single.

Yeah, "janet is OK (prefer Bobby Caldwells version though).

Ever get "united"? "Goin' to the bank" is pseudo funk/pop, but I like it. And the british accent (which is real but still camped up LOL), is funny aswell.

"take it from me" musta been a single, as I found the 12" of that. Love that song. "united in love" is great mid 80's MOR, love the production and song. Worth it for the first 3 songs. Love "united in love" and "take it from me". 80's music was so happy LOL

I would call it MOR/pop. Sure, the sentiment is nice and deeper then typical slushy MOR (they sound sincere), but it is quite MOR, and so thats probably why you hate it LOL
