Zhao Jiping

Just as Raise The Red lantern and Farwell To My Concubine were my introduction to 'world' cinema, so was the music that accompanied these movies an intrduction to Zhao Jiping's music.

To me, seeing parts of a culture so unfamiliar to me, brought by a director with an eye for the harshness of beauty, was a journey I still take quite often, or by watching the movies over and over again, but also by playing the music.

The Chinese music intrigues me, the way they use the instruments and voices, driving at times, gentle at other times.
Of course, Zhao Jiping does not make tradiotional music; his is a movie's score and it serves other goals, but it is still an amazing introduction.
