They're from Flint, Michigan.
Quick short story is they were a direct rip-off of another band from Detroit called "Dreamboy" who were signed to Quincy Jones' label. One of the guys from Dreamboy went on to produce Eminem.

Anyhoo, RFTW were basically a ripoff of Dreamboy and they put out a single and it got a huge amount of airplay which got them signed to MCA and the rest is jheri curl history.
