Rhinoceros - An overlooked band from the 60s

...When You Say You're Sorry

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

During the heady days of the 1960's, Elektra Records was the hub of some of the era's most respected artists. Founded by Jac Holzman in New York in 1950, initially as a specialist in folk music, Elektra's full-scale move into rock coincided with the emergence of the West Coast scene. By the end of the '60's, artists like The Doors, Love, Tim Buckley and The Paul Butterfield Blues Band were producing records, which were garnering the label considerable respect.

A large part of this success was due to Holzman's skill in nurturing such talent, although it's true that he also greatly benefited from a gifted bunch of producers and engineers, including the late Paul Rothchild. Rothchild (the son of a British businessman and an East Coast opera singer) had made a name for himself as The Doors' producer and as a result was given the latitude to pursue his own projects. The most ambitious of these was undoubtedly Rhinoceros, an ad-hoc assembly of talented musicians, who Rothchild initially dubbed 'Supergroup'.

Although much of the credit for 'Supergroup' has been attributed to Rothchild, the role of his musical associate, producer Barry Friedman (better known as Frazier Mohawk) was equally important during the group's early days. Mohawk was an intriguing character who'd been instrumental, among other things, in helping Steve Stills piece together The Buffalo Springfield. When Rothchild pitched the idea of forming a band (comprised of his favourite players) in the spring of 1967, Mohawk was fresh from production work on the debut album of one of LA's most promising outfits, the eclectic Kaleidoscope.

I ran across this group back in the late 60s through a fascination with Mothers of Invention drummer Billy Mundi.

When he left the Mothers I found him on the Rhinoceros album.

Danny Weiss - guitar
Doug Hastings - guitar, keyboards
Michael Fonfara - organ
John Finley - vocals
Alan Gerber - vocals, piano
Jerry Penrod - bass
Billy Mundi - drums

An interesting blend of Rockin' R&B tinged with Country

Definitely, Belbuekus kicked ass.

The instrumental single Apricot Brandy was the killer cut for me. That bass line bumpin' beneath the guitar riff made for a real cooker.

Heard it used on quite a few commercials back in the day.
It's on the above album and one of the tunes I considered uploading.

I don't think its said enough but I learn something new all the time, this group sounds pretty tight. Is this group similar to CAN, and do I have enough time in life to listen to their albums? Thanks Neal, you pitched a strike on this one.

Nice to hear these tunes again.

I had a huge vinyl collection (well, huge for me anyway) back in the day and had the first two from R.

The disturbing thing for me is I can't recall whatever happened to my records. sad

They didn't make it from one place to another during some move along the way.

Anyway, great song. I'd like to hear Buddy Miles get a hold of that one and do it his way but of course that's never going happen. The vocal style seems totally copped from Buddy.

The music on this one is also very close to Buddy's tune Wholesale Love but slowed down by half.

This won't take up much time at all.
I've got their second album which isn't close to being as good as their first imo.
By the third album there'd been a few band member changes so it doesn't sound like the same group.

Bottom line, you've really only got this one album that's mandatory. smile

Believe me I totally can relate to losing albums over time.
Might be able to lend some assistance.

Regarding Wholesale Love (a favorite), a closer match tempo & vibe wise would be Buddy's Your Feeling Is Mine from the Them Changes album imo.
