Hmmmm.....(MESHELL related) From http://www.freemyheart.com and the NY Times...
In NYC at the Mercury Lounge n April 28th (monday), May 12th & May 19th... "MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO IN ARTHUR AND THE COOPERS (Monday) Meshell Ndegeocello, the ever-experimental songwriter, bassist and lover of funk, jazz, rock and improvisation, unveils a mysterious new group whose only assurance is that it won’t be playing any of her old songs. At 7:30 p.m., Mercury Lounge, 217 East Houston Street, at Ludlow Street, Lower East Side, (212) 260-4700, mercuryloungenyc.com; $15 in advance, $17 on Monday. (Pareles)" "I don't know if she'll play bass, keys, guitar or all three -- or if she'll play the triangle. I don't know if she'll sing... etc. That said, with Meshell and Mark Kelley involved, there's no way I'd miss it if I lived closer. Especially since it's probably experimental, and in my opinion, that's when seeing Meshell live is at it's most exciting. One thing that management made clear is that this is NOT a Meshell show -- and with reading that email, I'm left with the impression that no music from Meshell's catalog will be played -- much like during the Spirit Music Jamia tour. That tour didn't hit Seattle, and I'm guessing I'm not the only one still kicking myself for missing out on that tour... that band... those set lists..." http://profile.myspace.co...=365140580 sounds verry interesting... .

I'm not a fan of huge cities, but this sort of thing shows that living in one has its advantages!! Dayum, only $15 too! "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Of that thirty percent, I'll bet the public has heard twenty percent of it." - Susan Rogers, "Hunting for Prince's Vault", BBC, 2015

I couldn't go but here's what someone who went posted...
"it was really killin...different as always from the other stuff. one or 2 of the tunes she played at trash bar that night, but they had developed a lot... texturally, it reminded me of "godspeed you black emperor" (the band, not the movie)-- ambient, reverb sounds, guitars, violas, like rain dripping down a window-- but most of the songs were 2 minutes long. the melodies were sometimes stylistically "emo", and sometimes the chord structures were too. it felt like music for a dying world. lyrics like... "I gave my baby a blackberry... she lost her mind" and "I get excited by blood on the curb" and "I hope you all die young." Not angry, like TWHMMTMOMD... just reflective and occasionally hopeful. it was mark kelley on bass (4 string!), greg something on gtr & pedal steel, eric something on elec. mandolin, viola, accordion and vocals on a few songs, an israeli drummer named yuval laiyon (real tight and subtle... a lefty), and meshell mostly on vocal duties and trading around bass, gtr, keys, etc. very cool, and they had only rehearsed for the first time yesterday, so i think it will grow the next 2 shows. she was in good spirits too... repeatedly thanking the audience for trying music they hadn't heard before, and adding that it was the most fun she had in years." sounds very very cool indeed...i know I'm very curious to hear some of this stuff myself... http://www.freemyheart.com .
