Meshell fans: Playlist please!!

Hi guys,

I'm going to see Meshell for the first time a week from Saturday. I only have two of her albums and I need to get schooled on what I need to be listening to before the show.

Supa, where you at? biggrin

Which ones?

To me most her albums are key. But if you want to 'get' the Meshel I have been hearing the last few performances and the latest album releases, make sure you get into The Spirit Music Jamia: Dance of the Infidel and The World Has Made Me the Man of My Dreams

They are genius, but fragmented albums, that might not want to give their key of understanding after one listen. It's a discovery, a trip. But both albums are key to the sort of Miles Davis infused music she is creating these days; all over the place, but with a certain focus that is enticing you on, to go deeper, deeper.

And normally I would suggest 'start at the beginning and worl your way up', but if it is only a week from now, you need the two previous albums.

The one to last time I saw Meshel tour with the Dance Of The Infidel material; I was awed. All instrumental, but that band made it such a trip. It was like seeing Miles Davis' band, but lifted into this millenium, fusing jazz with DJing and more. It was impossible to pinpoint what this band was playing, but it was what I wish N.E.W.S. had been; it totally rocked my offa my world.

So get the Dance Of The Infidel and after that do backtracking. Her first three albums are an amazing journey; she gets quieter and quieter and when she reaches the beautiful hush of Bitter (1999) ... wow.

Welcome!

She is one of those artists; there is no one like her. Her music is a journey, like Prince's once was. Thing with her though; she never stops journeying...

ditto what everyone else said. All of her albums are so different, and chances are that she wont play anything from them anyway razz

But, fyi:

Dance of the Infidel = Ambient/jazz(This album is a true band experience. Great album)
Bitter= meditive;somber;beautiful acoustic personal..(Amazing album)
Comfort Woman = totally dubbed-out. Headphone experience.(amazing)
Cookie= funk with an edge
Peace Beyond Passion: havent listened to this one in years, so I got nothin.
A happy face, A Thumpin Bass, For A Lovin' Race. PEACE.

This is a really good description nod Peace beyond Passion is my fave still, as incredible as Man of my dreams is.

I'd go with the last few. Man of my dreams, Comfort Woman and Cookie, throw dance in for good measure. Chances are she isn't going to focus on older material but she might just shock you smile

I am so excited for you!!!! biggrin Enjoy the show and let me know what you think smile

If I had to recommend one album it would be Bitter, which IMHO is her finest. But if I had to recommend a playlist of songs, I'd go with . . .

Picture Show (from Plantation Lullabies)
Good Intentions (from Comfort Woman)
The Way (from Peace Beyond Passion)
Grace (from Bitter)
Fool of Me (from Bitter)
Hot Night (feat. Talib Kweli) (from Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape)
Priorities 1-6 (from Cookie)
Body (from Comfort Woman)
Love Song No. 1 (from Comfort Woman)
Wasted Time (from Bitter)
The Sloganeer (from The World Has Made Me . . .)
Lovely Lovely (from The World Has Made Me . . .)
Bittersweet (from Peace Beyond Passion)
Stay (from Peace Beyond Passion)
Loyalty (from Bitter)

The thing about Me'Shell is that she always seems to play AHEAD of what she has out. I don't think I've ever heard her play a lot from past albums (except when she first came out). So get them to enjoy them, but don't expect to hear your favorites @ the show. In my experience she doesn't disappoint, it's always a good show. She introduces you to whatever she's vibing on @ the moment...

That said, at least get "The World Has Made Me..." & you should be cool biggrin

it's beautifully heartbreaking. it's my favorite, i think, though the latest one is a contender.

I kissed Me'Shell on the cheek after her Infidel-gig in Amsterdam.....mushy

I missed out on her last show here, last November.....I was at a Ryan Adams-gig that night (that also rocked!!!).....Man Of My Dreams is awesome though, can't stop hearing it! That album is full of complex soundscapes, yet it feels very coherent!

As stated before, her shows can be a total trip.....open yourself to it!Let the music do the work!
You'll have an awesome time, Ivy.....Enjoy!!!

Well.....

So much of what she sings about is unrequited love. She's really good on that number lol That's what attracts me to her tho cuz I'm always crying my heart out over some shit. Most of her music is gonna make you think about something. Most of her other albums are part social commentary, part political rants, part relationship 101.

I really like comfort woman because she pretty much revels in love, instead of basking in heartbreak and she's pretty much focused on nothing but that. I would consider that album the flipside of bitter's coin.

AGREED... Comfort Woman feels really celebratory to me nod & it's not really, but it has a more joyous feeling about it. Not in a sappy, "stfu w/ all that happiness shit" kinda way either lol but a genuine undercurrent of contentment. I'm making it sound goofy but that's the album of hers that I enjoy most b/c of the way it makes me feel biggrin
