Before she was famous.......

Cynthia Lauper sang in a band called Blue Angel, who got dropped after just one album. Despite their lack of success they were pretty good. Their music had a real sixties flavor. The sound of this song reminds me of Bruce Springsteen's "Hungry Heart" which is also an update on the early '60s pop sound. You could easily imagine a girl group like The Shirelles or The Chiffons singing this back in the day.

The original version of "I'm Gonna Be Strong" is from that album...It's simply my favorite cyndi song. Plus, it's a cover

Do you mean "I'm Gonna Be Strong" is a cover or this is a cover? I thought this was an original.

The song is from the 60's if I'm not mistaken. Then Blue Angel covered it on their album...later Cyndi did a new version for the "Twelve Deadly Cyns...and Then Some" compilation.

Right, you're talking about "I'm Gonna Be Strong" then. This song ("I Had A Love") is an original.

So who did the original of "I'm Gonna Be Strong"?

Jeez, I didn't know there were any copies on CD. I saw a good quality original vinyl copy on ebay once, but I just missed the deadline to bid. neutral

Their album also featured "Maybe He'll Know", which she ended up re-recording for the True Colors album 1986. Here she is performing it in it's original form. She was probably a bit too wild for her own good in those days, but you could already see she was onto her own thing.

Sadly not. They only released one album and as Cyndi put it, it "went lead". lol
