Erykah Badu is perfoming tonight!... in Moscow... but I can't go need to work...
She will be performing songs from her latest album 'New Amerykah Part One [Fourth World War] at Club B1. To be honest, I've only recently discovered her. I've listened through that album and 'World Wide Underground', I like them both but it's not the kind of thing I can sing along to. A little too heavy on 'meaningful messages' for my taste. Any fans of her around here who can enlighten me/ help me see her from a different angle?..

Her messages are revolutionary. How can you hate that?

To answer Cinnie & Rhondab in one go:
"what angle do you wanna see her from.... oh...you want meaningless messages...." "Her messages are revolutionary. How can you hate that?" I didn't know her at all when I bought her last album and WWU, and I guess at the time I was in the mood for something light, cheerful and something I could easily sing along to - well, bad choice. I didn't say I did not like her lyrics/messages, let alone hate them, it's just that I don't think they lend themselves to what I was looking for at the time. The music/melodies too: I found them on the whole very creative, bold, they challenge you, which is great. But it's not what I would call 'easy listening'. Content-wise, I understand most of it to be about serious social issues. Again, it's great if she is speaking out and perhaps giving a voice to the voiceless through her songs. All I'm saying is that I wasn't in the mood/prepared for such serious content when I picked her CDs. As for 'meaningful/meaningless' messages, wouldn't you agree that Badu is much deeper/more meaningful than say Mariah Carey's sugary love songs?

you don't have to dig her messages (i do), you should pay attention to the non stop grooves and her beats, that shit is more powerful than crack.
and how is WWU deep on the 'messages' except for one really short song (the grind) and 'danger?' and we were right around the block till after dark when we come home hope the dog don't bark puff I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Advice taken! Like I said, in terms of her grooves&beats, musically, she seems very bold and ready to take risks - just my impression.
Sure, WWU is lighter than the last album, but I still think it's very 'socially aware' - The Grind, Danger, then she wrote that 'Back in the day (puff) was inspired by 'adolescents experimenting at being young', then somehwere in the album's artwork you have a David's cross, not sure what it's doing there and if it's supposed to send a particular message... Anyway, I'll keep exploring Badu Land badujunkie said: you don't have to dig her messages (i do), you should pay attention to the non stop grooves and her beats, that shit is more powerful than crack.
