If This World Were Mine: 1967 version vs. 1982 version, which one is YOUR favorite?

The original by Marvin & Tammi:

The cover by Luther & Cheryl:

Here's something amazing about this song: Marvin Gaye himself wrote it solely. nod

Nothing beats Marvin & Tammi, and it's ridiculous to suggest that it can be done lol

I like both versions, but I love the 1982 version

nod

There's something more urgent about Lynn and Vandross' delivery that gets me from Luther's FIRST note. Definitely sexier.

Tammi Terrell was soooo cute. Did ya'll know she was hooked up with James Brown and David (crazy ass) Ruffin of the Temptations and they both were physically abusive to her??? sad She had the sweetest voice. Too bad it was silenced so young.

I would have to say, Lutha's nod as much as I resent covers,,,,Luther is one of the few artists who re-wrote the cover songs completely to fit his own sound. Dionne Warwick's "A House Is Not A Home" is another example of what I'm talking about. He def breaths a new life into the songs he cover,,,,this(Marvin's song) is one of 'em.

Of course minus the disastrous cover "Album" he made in the early 90's. What a hot mess disbelief

I agree, and I definitely prefer his cover of "If This World Were Mine" with Cheryl Lynn. It's more soulful.Throughout the 80s,Luther was a master at remaking songs and taking them to another whole level. His remake of "Creepin" is at least as good as Stevie's original.

Again,I agree with you.Luther's remakes are usually superb, but that 'Songs' album is a snoozefest, especially the "Endless Love" remake with Mariah Carey barf

Speaking of remakes, you know you a bad mofo when you take The Carpenters version of superstar and make it ridiculously soulful. Luther, even when doing covers, was a COMPLETE original. I still cry when I hear his songs on the radio. I miss him. rose Since I Lost My Baby is another classic remake from Luther. That voice disbelief Simply effortless.

It's a shame that in today's music industry a guy that looks like Luther would never get a record deal because of the mold that all male and female singers MUST fit into (literally and figuratively). Sadly, the world will probably miss out on many great talents because they're not overly attractive with washboard abs and the public will continue to be forcefed the likes of Rihanna and Usher. sigh

The Carpenters

Luther
