I'm not that fond of that album, probably coz Uncle Q didn't give his ALL focus like he did to MJ's Off The Wall and the Brothers Johnson's albums that came in the same year.
I love the semi-autobiographical What Am I Missing? though. | |

Masterjam did seem a little lazy compared to what we knew they could do hell, the Camouflage album has more "grits eatin shit" on it than Masterjam and we know that was a half-ass album well, in a broad sense... because the album is good (not great)... full of that Rene & Angela "good stuff" mixed with Rufus' style but still not up to par with say Street Player thanx funkpill haven't seent the "Masterjam" clip in a while full of that late "70's pre-condom cheese" that I love so much ROTFL DEAD @ the quality of the video but it's so GREAT because I mean, who knew there was a video for this track? I love Lalomie Washburn's 2 cents in the Chakaless Rufus albums. As much as I love Chaka, I think her stubborness got in the way,,,and hell, she didn't make anything that could compete with the stuff she did with Rufus. | |

Long before they were Rufus we used to go see them in tiny little bars on Chicago's north side as Ask Rufus. This was like 1970 or '71 right after I got back from Viet Nam.
They got a break by playing at the Kinetic Playground, a venue operated by the late Aaron Russo that was on a par with Bill Graham's Fillmore Ballroom on the left coast. These venues were mostly white rock acts but sometimes we would be treated to a soul act to fill out the bill. I believe Rufus got launched here by being exposed to a wider audience. I saw Parliament (pre-P Funk touring behind their hit Testify), Baby Huey and the Baby Sitters and Cream on one bill. Buddy Miles came through regularly and I never missed him when he was in town. The 3 Kings tour was really cool- Albert King, Freddy King and B.B.King for a night of all blues. And Rotary Connection was always around. They just killed in person and I'm sorry they never released a live album. For those of you familiar with their catalog, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised with their live sound. Because they couldn't reproduce their signature orchestral studio sound in person they offered up way more funky versions of their compositions with heavy bass forward in the mix and added congas.
