DeBarge - "Stay With Me" Wiki Trivia: DeBarge's "Stay With Me" is sampled on The Notorious B.I.G.'s "One More Chance" remix (featuring Biggie's eventual wife Faith Evans), and Ashanti's song "Foolish" as well as Ne-Yo's "Stay". "A Dream" was sampled by Tupac in "I Ain't Mad At Ya" and in Blackstreet's "Don't Leave". Mary J. Blige recorded a cover version of the DeBarge song, "A Dream" which up to that point had been covered only in sampled form by the artists mentioned above. In the Ying Yang Twins' "Bedroom Boom" (which featured Avant), his song "All This Love" is referenced: All this love is waiting for you, like I'm El DeBarge. The rapper AZ samples "All This Love" in his track "Problems" from the album 9 Lives. Mariah Carey samples "Stay With Me" in her song "I'll Be Lovin' You Long Time," off of her album "E=MC²" [Edited 4/17/08 14:42pm]

Love this joint! Probably one of my fave DeBarge cuts. That groove is unlike any thing that I've heard. No wonder Biggie used it for his biggest hit. Check me out and add me on:

All of hip-hop need to give up a million dollars to the DeBarge family. Hell, they're the ones who made me realize how great of a group they were in the first place.

I love that song. | |

One of their best. Saying the Ashanti song sampled it is being nice. They kept the music, changed the lyrics and added a whispered "murder inc.," here and there.

I need to find this song now for my mp3 library!!!
I want to give it to somebody in a mix on the other side of the coin, it makes it so sad to see how children that talented sort of fell by the wayside and under so much hardship. I STILL listen to old Debarge cuts TODAY and realize there aren't young people in current r&b who can (or are willing to) construct songs like this...you get everything with the Debarges, from tight harmonies to killer arrangments...I miss that in r&b today

Love me some Debarge. I'm always spinning their greatest hits. Love me in a Special Way and All this Love are my faves. Ooooooh, I had the biggest crush on El.

Girl, when I was maybe 14 (?), I was RIGHT THERE in the middle of Debarge madness at a record store signing they had for "All This Love"...my little happy teeny bopper ass was on cloud 9 . I think my mom still has the polaroid pictures I took of them from that day...I remember Bunny Debarge was behind the cash register with some oldskool fuzzy pink houseshoes on with her 80's style tracksuit, chain smoking menthol cigarettes. There were so many girls crowding (and fainting!)around El, from that day forward I decided to have my crush on Mark instead ... Lawd, the good ole days

I had a chance to see El in concert a few months back with Najee, but I didn't go. I wanted to preserve my idealistic memories of him and his family.

I really enjoyed their music as well.
It is funny because at the time, their music was considered light weight because it was top 40 stuff... not thought provoking like EWF etc. Their songs were about easy subjects... love, dancing having a good time. But the truth is, their lyrics, their hooks, arrangements and harmonies are HEAD AND SHOULDERS over what people of their age today are putting out. Debarge didn't sample, they created!! and for that I have new mad respect. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

They were also labeled bubblegum but their music was actually more adult than they were getting credit for since the men were basically pretty boys and Bunny was the sole dream chick.

More Trivia:
Rapper "Big L" sampled this cut before Biggie, who while on tour with Big L heard the track and decided he wanted to use it too.

Debarge is one of my favorite groups- it is such a shame their fame was short lived.
Wonder if they could get together and tour with the Jacksons- that would be hot- then Eldra and Michael could do duets LOVE HARD.

I love this song and I love DeBarge. I had all their albums when I was a kid and this cut along with All This Love and Time Will Reveal are some of my favorite songs ever. Hip-Hop and R&B owes a lot to them. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I don't know if anybody here remembers better than me, but I think Chico was on the show, too, with VERY LARGE new wave peroxide blond hair . He sure did grow up to be a sexy thang, though. I'd be mad too!

I sought this out after Biggie's famous 1995 remix "One More Chance/Stay With Me".
Now that Debarge album is one I would like to see reissued with the deluxe Hip-O treatment. [Edited 4/18/08 11:35am]

On a sad note, two weeks ago El Debarge and George Clinton were in Houston in the studio (George Clinton's management is based in Houston so he seems to be in town quite a bit), and they stopped by a local television station and El Debarge was acting so irradically, it was clear something was going on. George seemed fine but El Debarge seemed so outside of himself and was just all over the place. He couldn't stay still. It was really sad to seem him like that. I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

Years ago, I used to waitress in this nightclub and Chico came to perform when he had that hit. Afterwards, when I was working VIP he told me I was cute and that I look just like his mother. WTF???? I told him, "Well, I guess it ain't gon' jump off if I look like your mama and shit????" [Edited 4/18/08 10:50am]

It would've been too traumatic to see Chico. DeBarge really went through some PROBLEMS! I think El's problem could be medication-related.
