maaan I wouldn't pay to fly in a bunch of one hit wonders either. they were probably losing money because as someone said earlier, the state of r&b is down. I don't know if not enough use of the neo soul type artists and too much of the one hit wonders and gangsta rappers with their pants sagging or what the deal is, but I wouldn't pay for a lot of them to show up. no sense in ruining a rep that didn't start that way. nipsy

I remember the year they forgot to book a venue for the awards (2003 -2005?) and had it at the soul train studio where they film the series. They brought out folding chairs from your moma's last church function and had A-list celebrities cramed in next each other.
So ghetto. I remember Usher won an award and had to walk 12 inches to reach the stage. It took him a minute because evryone had to move out of the way without falling over the folding chairs. Since the studio is so small there was no room for an audience so the applause was a track. I think Ciara performed (lip-synched). Fun times. After that year no one with any sense would attend that H.A.M (Hot Ass Mess). [ZUNECARD]MikeChristopher[/ZUNECARD]

I won a Soul Train Award once for Best Male Speller on the Soul Train Scramble Board.
I put the award up on eBay ahile ago but am still waiting for any bids to come in. If any of y'all reading this would like to place a bid on it, orgnote me. It is in near mint condition & is autographed by Howard Hewitt, the name that I had to spell that got me the nomination. Haggling is invited. ... [Edited 4/17/08 21:35pm]

I'm beginning to think there's a behind-the-scenes reason why the show was canceled: no one came up with the money to put the show at a respective place therefore troubles with the show's actual airings and no one knowing it was on when it'd come on at 4:30 in the morning. It's sad when you think about it. It can also be the Suge Knight factor. Everytime he appears at any award show, controversy happens.

MuthaFunka said: Damn. I remember going to the very 1st Soul Train awards in 1989 and now the shit is done. Then again, it lost a lot of credibility over the years, especially when it gave the Aretha Franklin Lifetime Achievement Award to Ashanti one year. Ridiculous. Then there was the time when Beyonce (I think it was her) was winning awards for the same damn album she won awards for the year before LOL! That's when the shit started to really go downhill. And yeah, the violence that was connected to it as well had something to do with it.
Classic Soul Train Awards Moments: 1. Everytime Whitney Houston wins any award, the whole audience booed. 2. Everyone was happy when Color Me Badd won 2 awards. But when they won a 3rd award that same night, the whole audience booed. 3. When Vanilla Ice was nominated, the biggest boos in Soul Train Awards history took place. 4. TLC was the first and only group in Soul Train Awards history to NOT get booed for winning too many awards. 5. When Snoop Dogg won his first ever Soul Train Award, he referred to the show as THE Black People's Grammys! He said this in responds to the Grammy Awards Committee denying him an award for the Best New Rap Artist category. 6. When rap group Public Enemy won a Soul Train Award, that moment mark the first and only time the group won ANY music award from any award show.

Not being picky, but since you said it was for correctly spelling his name, it's actually "Hewett." That might make the award even more interesting! Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.

BET is needs to keep honoring the ol'schoolers to keep the ratings up. What ever happen to that VH1 Diva show? They sure do. The old schoolers are the best part of the show, heeeeeheeeee- .... and with VH-1, I always imagined that they ran out of "divas". None of these young folks are really up to par with with the old schoolers...and even from the old school bunch, I think we might only have enough Divas to count on fingers and toes. I noticed they started to repeat guests after a while. For the younger ones I would see some people on there and wonder "why is she on there as a Divette" (i.e. Ashanti, Jewel, and some others). I Guess ultimately the show just ran out of steam. I wish they could format diffrently and bring it back though, cause I was a big fan of the "Save The Music" program it supported.

Regarding the TV show....it's time to let soul Train rest in peace. The show's been "dead" for awhile now.I stopped watching in the late 80s.
They need to concentrate on the 70s and early 80s episodes Release those episodes on DVD!

The Aretha Franklin Lifetime Achievement Award did go to Ashanti one year, didn't it ??? Wasn't this the incident that sparked a nationwide protest petition with folks saying she should give the award back? I remember this being a hot topic a few years ago...

I'm now hearing that Don himself canceled the ST Music Awards because he was worried about the strike and that he hoped to bring it back next year. He's also planning a movie about two guys who make a trip to the show. It said Don canceled "Soul Train" in 2006.

It gets on my last good nerve when I see black artists run their mouths on & on about the same ol' "we should support our own" militant cliche,,,,yet when they cross their asses to the other side of town, those same mofos forget what they preached.
Talk about the shortest memory ever. Oh yes, there's no such thing as BET no more,,,its UTET(Uncle Toms Entertainment TV) the minute it was sold to viacom. If you want some black entertainment, stick with TvOne or PBS. Flush the rest down the toilet.
