Favorite Miles Davis albums?

I have A Kind Of Blue, Sketches Of Spain, the complete In A Silent Way Sessions and the complete Bitches Brew sessions - what should I get next? Needless to say, A Kind Of Blue is my favorite...

I am far from knowledgeable about Miles Davis, but I like Bitche's Brew and On the Corner the most.

Miles

If you like 'Kind of Blue, then find 'Milestones' and 'Stella By Starlight - '58 Sessions'. These have a similar vibe and are by more or less the same band as on 'Kind of Blue'.

For a more 'Bitches Brew' - type groove, go for 'Live at Fillmore East 1970 - It's About That Time' and 'A Tribute to Jack Johnson. Both are amazing.

If you get 'On the Corner'and like it, then get the live albums 'Agharta' and 'Pangaea'.

For the best of late period Miles, I would suggest getting 'Aura', 'Tutu' and 'Doo-bop'.

Porgy and Bess, Kind Of Blue, Sketches Of Spain. I know that isn't the coolest selection with jazz purists, but I can honestly say the my favorite Coltrane song of all time is Sun Ship, so there.

Miles would be rolling over in his grave today

Or do you think he would have conformed?

I was sitting here reading the following passage from his autobiography:

"But it's still the black thing that is leading the way, like break dancing, hip-hop, and rap. Even the music theyare doing on commercials is hip these days, man. They got Baptist gospel music up in some of them. What's funny is that they got white people singing that shit and wearing it out. They're trying to look like us and sing like and play like us. So now black artists have to do something else. People in Europe and Japan and Brazil ain't fooled by that. It's only the stupid people here who are."

Considering that this was written in 1989, 2 years prior to his death, do you think Miles would have rebelled against the ways of the current music industry? Or would he have gone on to record with the likes of the Timberlakes, Aguileras and Spears?

Thanks for the suggestions - I figure On The Corner might be part of the Complete Jack Johnson Sessions box set coming within the year, so I won't buy that yet (I had no idea so many people think it's a great album, though - that was cool to find out).

In fact, many of the albums people suggested are included in the box-sets, all of which I'm planning to get as I save more money, so I went for the Complete Birth Of The Cool sessions - it's great to play that and Bitches Brew back to back. He transformed himself and his style a whole lot.

you should get some of the wayne shorter era cds. the complete box set is of course killer, for separate cds: "nefertiti" is brilliant as well as "sorcerer"

seven steps to heaven is very good. "miles live in europe" -antebes, jazz fest 1963, "miles live in tokyo" 1964 and "miles live in berlin" 1964 are superb. the last 2 are only available only as japanese imports in the u.s. (the last time i looked).

'58 sessions and milestones are also great.

I don't think I can pick a favorite until I own them all! I'm greedy like that. Nefertiti and On The Corner get most of the play in my cd player though. I thought I was the only one who loved On The Corner. The title track was recorded on my birthday. Yay!

Water Babies is an excellent album. It's completely impossible to choose one album, I'd melt down if I seriously had to choose.

Tracks with Tony Williams on drums are phatyphatphat. I love him. Also the old stuff with Cannonball on sax. *sigh* wish I could have been a fly on the wall at some of those old shows.

Agreed. There are too many albums and too many stylistic stages that he went through for me to say "That's the one!" But when it comes to acoustic jazz KOB is at the top for me.

Kind of Blue is the one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. It's like bottled euphoria. It's the epitome, but choosing it as my favorite is like choosing the the Lakers as my favorite team. Sure, every other album is constantly held up in comparison to Some Kind of Blue, it's huge, but I like the varying depth and the mood of some of the lesser albums. On The Corner is such a serious trip, like the Lovesexy of his repertoire. Anybody actually have the complete Montreaux set?

ok...LOL! I just looked at your profile supernova...oops! That Lakers comment was in no way meant to be directed at you. Some Kind of Blue + The Lakers = The greatest. See, much love...

It's ok, I don't take things like that personally, it's just sports. Trust me, I don't own the team. biggrin

Plus, I just said that as an acoustic jazz album KOB is the one for me - not necessarily THE ONE PERIOD.

Yeah, there is really no way to choose -the one-, I can't even effectively put them in any kind of order, best to worst, or whatever. It's totally impossible. I would never hate on any of Miles albums, I love Some Kind of Blue too. However...I'm usually a die hard hatin on the Lakers slash and burn NBA fan, and I drudged up that Lakers compliment just for you...feel loved...
