It's an oft-overlooked track on what I believe is her best album to date.
The poignant, usually semi-autobiographical lyrics are powerfully sung.

Why does she point her finger up and down when she is hitting high notes. she acts like her voice range is still amazing like it was in 1994.
The whole gimmick of her hands waving & finger pointing is such a joke, in her prime her voice isnt as good as Andrea Bocelli. Watch him he holds notes way longer and he doesnt even move/change his facial expression. All these hand gesters are so lame.

She does it for the same reason that Prince still does that wore out hand to the ear gesture.

It s anice tune. There are many many Mariah songs over looked. I personally think 4th Of July and Close My Eyes are startling. I gotta check out outside again. I just recently discovered The Wind and didnt know how sad and classy that song is Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

The whole album is slammin' from start to finish(YES! including the Prince cover too) I would say that was her MOST personal album ever. No gimmick, no fluff,,,,Pure Mariah 100%(unlike her new album).
Outside is heartbreaking because it vents about her frustration,,,,,something she hasn't got over yet. 4th Of July is a delight Loooove Babydoll too, if I'm not mistaken, that was about Derek Jeter,,,,in fact, I think Derek was the inspiration behind the whole album. Although you'd never catch her telling it.

perfect track.
won't talk about the songwriting in it because that's obvious, but vocally speaking, its Goddamn mind blowing. she bottles up and bottles up and bottles up then BAAAAAM you've got a vocals carnival towards the bridge

I love "The Roof." Love it. As far as "Outside" goes, I always preferred "Looking In" (which is thematically quite similar). But I do believe "Butterfly" is my favorite Mariah album. "She made me glad to be a man"

i still think he's the only guy she genuinely loved. too bad he wasn't comfortable enough with her international stardom.

I always thought the Derek Jeter thing was light fare. Supposedly they’re still friends but it was Luis who had her whupped. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Derek, however, is the only one she still mentions positively, not to mention is apparently the inspiration behind most of her songs.

Do you have that quote?
A long time ago, someone claimed that she said Derek Jeter was the best lover she had. I've never heard Mariah talk about sex openly. [Edited 4/18/08 14:15pm] love is a fate resigned memories mar my mind love it is a fate resigned Over futile odds and laughed at by the Gods and now the final frame Love is a losing game

^if my memory serves me right she said that on her 1st appearance on the Wendy Williams show.

"Subtle Invitation" The mofo was inscure though and she's better off,,,if what you said is true.
