It's just interesting that Jimi Hendrix was questioned for the "blackness" of his music. I remember my mom (who is black) saying that even The Motown Sound of the 1960s -- stuff like the Supremes, Marvelettes, the Vandellas, Four Tops -- was actually considered "too white" at the time by her peers. I remember seeing a Motown doc on VH! classic and Motown was actually criticized for being too white in comparison to Chess records (?) and Stax records(?) both of which were more "soulful" than Motown. Some of the older heads may be able to assist here, but Motown moved into funk after watching the success of funk acts from other labels who had their finger on the pulse of Black america. Hendrix was another matter altogether. It seems to be an recurring theme through various points of popular black music when an artist comes from left field like Hendrix did with a sound/look unlike anyone else's, the core of the music is questioned. Music in its purest form is a colorless medium, but there is always the urge to put the square peg (Hendrix) into the round hole (popular Black music of the 1960's). "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fashion/Humans rigorously attempt to dictate which section of the cafeteria is appropriate. But music, especially the greatest music, sits wherever it damn well pleases. | |
