My thoughts exactly, he got the formula right with "You Are Not Alone" then everything after that was predictable. I believe I can fly, Gotham City, I wish all the same song with the same choir at the end with different lyrics. Talk about a lack of originality.

Formula? How about the same presets on a Korg workstation.

And that choir stuff had already been previously done in the 1980s with the rock group Foreigner so it wasn't even original the first time R. Kelly did it.

true dat. Even Prince did it on Graffiti Bridge "Still Would Stand All Time" before Chester the molester.

I never did like New Jack. The whole time it was going on, I was into house music. Mainstream R&B was off my dial by then. I was flipping over to white stations, of all things, who were jamming stuff like Black Box, Cee Cee Penniston, Crystal Waters, etc. while the R&B stations were playing lots of slow dull stuff inbetween new jack swing music. I thought the world had come to an end. White stations were jamming harder than black stations. That was a first. lol

Throw in Tara Kemp & Jane Child to the mix, and that sums up most of the few things about the early 90's dance scene that I miss the most.

Man I was loving New Jack and House at that time. I loved all those people you named and Guy and Keith Sweat and stuff like that. I was a kid then but the radio was always on and I was jammin to everything on it. I wish the radio was still like it was back in 1991. music

Songs R's wrote for Toni Braxton, Michael Jackson, Changing Faces, and even Celine Dion are just an interchangeable as R's earlier hits.

And if we're talking about hits, then R does have an advantage over Prince in that regardless. But if we're talking about being groundbreaking, Prince's work with The Time & Shelia E. are the best classics.
[Edited 4/16/08 11:08am]

I believe that P is atrociously overrated as a producer... Many folks think that because P is great artist, automatically he's a great producer as well, I don't think so...

And to be honest with you, most of the stuff he made for other artists are garbage...

The Time is the only serious act from the Prince camp, but the Time were great on their own... It's not like if they depended on Prince to make good music...

Prince has never managed to be successful working with old school artists (Larry Graham? Mavis Staple ? Miles Davis? EWF ? etc)

R Kelly as much as I don't like him has been a FAR better and successful producer...
Not only he produced BIG hits for BIG artists, but he also produced Big hits for his protégés and also resurrected old school acts like The Isley Brothers (Doyou believe that ?)

R Kelly made it all as a producer...
[Edited 4/16/08 13:04pm]

Besides The Time, Shelia E. & Tevin Campbell had good songs produced by Prince as well.

As much as i can't stand R. Kelly's ass, I actually have to give the nod to him over Prince as a producer. Prince's material is much, much better but Prince has failed as a producer many times over. He can't seem to make a song fit an artist well. Most of his productions sound like songs HE would do. We once had this argument here at the org over Jimmy/Terry vs. Prince as producers. I don't like Kelly's music (I don't judge him as a person; I don't know that fool) but if I were given a budget for a new artist and told to pick a producer between R. Kelly and Prince, I'd HAVE to pick Kelly if I wanted the CD to sell. A producer will do what is necessary to make the ARTIST sound good. Prince just tends to use artists to make himself look more prolific.

R Kelly may have had alot of hits, but that does'nt make a good producer. I have'nt heard much variety in his music, just hip hop/r&b. He only make music to make hits. Prince on the other hand make music just for the sake of making music. He's done many different types. All R kelly seem to be putting out is remixes of stuff he's done so many times before, especially with his up in the club theme. Is that all he's inspired by now?

Lots of great producers only do one style of music. Style variety isn't all that important; as a matter of fact, it can be a hindrance because labels don't like artists that are hard to categorize. Prince makes different kinds of music but all of his productions sound like some other artist singing Prince songs. Kelly has songs that I didn't even know he did until later. I didn't like them, but I didn't know he did them. The only song he's produced that I truly like is Maxwell's "Fortunate".

The only song that I will praise R. Kelly for producing and writing is this one:

Everything else is dog poo....or piss in a bucket/hair/on kid...whatever shrug

nod I begrudginly give him THIS one (even though I kinda get mad when I hear his damn voice on the backing vox ill ). . . and depending on my mood I MIGHT give him I Believe I Can Fly. . . Okay, also, the stuff he did for Aaliyah. . . but the rest hammer

You have listed enough to give my opinion.

R Kelly is a better producer. Sorry. Aaliyah sounds nothing like Maxwell, who sounds nothing like R Kelly's own music.

Prince produces someone, they are just an extentino of Prince's own music direction, instead of taking a talent and maximize the potential, Prince takes a talent and try to mold it into a version of himself.

If you were a talent and needed a producer who would you want? prince or R Kelly. Why don't we ask Jill Jones, Bonnie Boyer, Robin Powers, Tamar Davis, Maxwell, Aaliyah (God rest her soul if we could ask).... Who do you think they would pick. I know who *I* would.

Maybe it's just me, but All of R Kelly music sound very, very similar to me. I can tell when he produced something whether he performed it or someone else does, and I don't really even listen to his music. Aaliyah, Isley Brothers, Charlie Wilson , Maxwell, and etc all sound like R kelly when he produce for them.None of his music seem to have depth. Just booty shaking, bump n grinding, and hanging up in the club.Selling music he may have been good at, but I think it's a joke to consider him a good producer.

I'm sorry but this is exactly the opposite... R Kelly made a lot of songs for other artists that are not "R kelly" identifiable...

But Prince ? same style for ALL his protégés... Same look, same singing, same procution

Remember Love Bizarre ? Mia Boca ? 100 MPH ? Dance Electric ? Sex Shooter ?

Exactly! What the fuck are these fools talking about? All R Kelly's productions sound the same. That Maxwell production is the same as he did for Sparkle. He mixes it up for his artists no more or less than Prince does. If anything, he actually has less variety.

And the reason he has more success with others than Prince did is because he works with people who already had some career momentum before they met him, whereas Prince tended to pluck talentless people like Vanity, Applolonia and that lead singer from Mazarati out of nowhere, sign them to his own label, and completely dominate their image. That shows what an egotist and a control freak he is, but it has nothing to do with how skilled he is when he gets to work in the studio.

The way to judge a producer is to look at the music, not their commercial track record. Here are just three of P's productions. There is more versatility and quality in these than you will get in R's body of work.

Nope, nope,

Prince worked with Madonna and it was trash... In fact he never managed to make hits with BIG artists as well...

Again, you are confusing the talent of P as a solo artist, and as a producer... As a producer, R Kelly is better... And R Kelly successfully worked with new artists and established artists as well, He's behind Aaliyah... He resurected the Isley Brothers... He made a lot of hits for artists without making them sound like him... This is what a great producer is all about...

The way to judge a producer is to see his capacity to make artists shine... Tell me how many artists gained from working with Prince ?...
It seems to me that Prince tries to mold his artists while, R Kelly IMO only tries to make them shine...

His duet with Madonna was never released as a single so of course it wasn't a hit. Anyone who's heard it will know it was never intended to be a hit. It was a quirky, almost avant garde track, and gives a good indication of how much more versatile he is than Kelly. Kelly has never really stepped out of the norm. His work is always predictably straightforward. If you look at the Martika track I posted above (a Top 10 hit by the way) you can see another example of Prince's greater depth as a writer and producer. R Kelly has never produced anything as sensuous and surreal as that. To get a track like that in the Top 10 is an accomplishment that goes beyond statistics.

He made a lot of hits for artists without making them sound like him... This is what a great producer is all about...

Is this a joke? Every track R Kelly produced always sounded like R Kelly. In that sense he is no different to Prince. Where they differed was that R Kelly worked with better singers and he had no involvement in anything other than writing and producing for these artists. Unfortunately Prince was such an egomaniac he would deliberately take weak artists and make them dress like him, perform like him, and turn them into clones. But that is more a criticism of him as an A&R man than as a producer. As an A&R man he sucked. As a producer, he did great work, as the clips I posted above demonstrate.

Now, would you go to Prince if you were looking for a producer to help you find a unique identity? Of course not, but you wouldn't go to R Kelly either, because his productions are just as uniform as Prince's. Even when he produced people like Celine Dion, he gave them the typical R Kelly production. So what it really comes down to is who's sound you think is better, and with all due respect to R, my vote goes to Prince.
