RZA Resurrects Bobby Digital

Wu-Tang beatmaker RZA will step out of the Clan to bring his sci-fi alter ego Bobby Digital back for the first time in almost a decade.

RZA will unleash "Digi Snacks" on July 1st, followed by a month-long tour. We spoke to the legendary producer about his new solo record, and predictably, he was elusive.

There may or may not be guest rappers or fellow Wu clansmen to help Bobby Digital in his latest adventure. How about producers? “As the emcee, it’s hard for me to produce all the tracks myself, so there’s about three or four producers on the album as well,” RZA says. “But I’m not gonna bat out their names right now.” RZA also admitted that there’s thirteen songs, but wouldn’t embellish beyond the two already-internet-released tracks “Drama” and first single and “You Can’t Stop Me Now,” featuring Wu-Tang’s Inspectah Deck. “‘You Can’t Stop Me Now’ was made for Digi Snacks, but I tried to put it on 8 Diagrams because it felt the vibe of 8 Diagrams. But there was too much Bobby, too much RZA, so I said, ‘You know what, I’ll hook it up with this joint,’” RZA says.

RZA describes the album as “fun.” “You’re in your car or you’re in your crib, and it’s that hour of the day when you smoke weed and shit — I got an album for you,” he says.

So why is the rapper taking it so easy? “Wu-Tang is important to the world. We need to be cognizant of what we do. But we as individuals, we don’t got that same banner over the top of our head, so I think with the Digi album, I can do whatever the fuck I want, say whatever the fuck I want, act how I want, just have fun,” Bobby Digital himself says. “ODB used to just put the recorder on, get drunk and make noise and just express yourself, and I think hip-hop is back at that phase right now. Musicianship, yo.”

RZA also plans to take Digi Snacks on the road, performing with Wu-endorsed funk/soul band Stone Mecca for a month’s worth of shows (tour dates below). Says the Razor, “We’re gonna have a live band, crazy sounds. You’re gonna have fun with us, yo. I promise you that.”

I was just praising
his first two albums
in that Wu-Tang thread
not too long ago

I can hardly wait
"be who you are and say what you feel
because those who mind don't matter
and those who matter don't mind."
