What the hell is going on in uk music scene these days its full of middle class fakes pretending to be from working class backgrounds to have credibility. I must point out that I dont have anything against the middle class only the ones who pretend there not and there are so many of them about eg Lilly Allen, Kate Nash, Pete Doherty, The Kooks, Donny Tourette etc. I mean I even have more respect for the satans turd that is james blunt because at least he is what he is and doesnt pretend to be anything other than a posh boy. I think its the combination of the fakeness and the fact there musics shite that really gets on my tits.

Musicians exaggerating their life story are nothing new. The title subject of the Org has engaged in it from time to time and was able to make a blockbuster movie out of it!

Well its obvious you yourself are middle class from what you have said, but it seems to me you havent read my opening statement at all. You also seem to have a very snobbish archaic view of the working class as "on food stamps, in public housing, in jails and prisons, social security/disability, etc and that the middle class fund the shit that allows people to sit on their asses and do nothing." So what, do the working class not pay taxes?? Youve basically answered some question that wasnt even asked. My point was if you had bothered to read it properly Why are there so many musicians who where born into middle class privileged backgrounds pretending to be from poorer working class background for credibility which although youll never know, really pisses people off who were actually really born into poorer backgrounds and have had to struggle all their life. I mean if it was just me banging on about how I hate the middle class as you have tried to suggest I wouldnt like Pink Floyd Radiohead etc which isnt true I like those bands first and foremost because they make great music and secondly they dont pretend they arent middle class. Its the complete phoniness of it all that pisses me off!!!

Yeah, I found Horatio's post a little funny too. Not only because it ignores the subject matter on the top post, but because it's based on such worn-out view on working ethics and how the public funding works by assuming that only the people who get paid more for their work "work their asses off" and "support those ones who don't work". I think it would be fairer to assume that some vietnamese immigrant who works as a cleaner lady at Sainsbury's might be "working more" than someone at a higher paid position at some computerized office.

By the way, even jobless people pay taxes. The money does neither originate or end up - from as far as the circulation of finances are considered - from any different location. In fact, these days many "middle class" workers end up working for companies and in organizational structures that in no way benefit the nation's finances on the overall. Just because you're working for a company that is able to pay better wages for its employees, doesn't mean that what's at stake on the overall structure would be advantagous on the national level (due to globalization). There is always taxation of course, but in European economies it's still highly debatable whether it's still enough.

As far as this topic goes, UK's pop music scene has been like that for ages. Emphasizing one's social background was probably at its highest peak during the 90s. In NME and Melody Maker all they talked about was being "working class". And I don't know, shit about pubs and art schools.

Yes exactly well said novabrkr. I also remember the 90s brit pop thing which came from the fact that oasis where from a council estate and where so successfull, which meant that bands like blur would make stuff up about there own background. I remember Damon for example saying that his dad had been a bin man which was complete bollocks so yeah I think its always gone on but why do people do it and why is it so prevalent at the moment???? I mean nobody can help where they were born so dont lie about it...

Oh yeah and I just remebered when vanilla Ice said he was from the ghetto from the streets when in reality he was actually from a middle class background and his name was robert van winkle or something.

Try to also keep in mind that for many US orgers, they might not be familiar with the personal backstories of a lot of the UK acts that have crossed over to our music charts. So for alot of folks here, they're not going to get caught up in nuances like who Allen's father is or what what's wrong with her accent; they never knew about it in the first place and probably won't care really. That being said, it's perfectly reasonable that some of us here are going to like Lilly Allen. I don't know who her father is and could care less. She's cute, sings a decent pop song and that's satisfactory enough for me. If I want something deep and mature on a musical level then I'll go listen to some Tania Maria or something, I'm not trying to hold some pop teeny bopper up to that standard, and would not like to see myself (or anyone else for that matter) criticized and called sad for it
