I love Still Life (Talking), but it might be for sentimental reasons since as a youngster, I attended one of his concerts, and this was the album he was promoting. It was an outdoor concert.. and just a perfect evening. Amazing. http://www.amazon.com/Sti...B000CZ0Q5W | |

After those, my favorites are First Circle, Letter from Home , and the live album, Travels, and We Live Here....all show him constantly maturing as a composer...

It's certainly a task to navigate the Pat Metheny catalog as a newbie. His Pat Metheny Group projects are probably better-known, but there are individual and group projects outside the Group (two cited by Neal are before the Group was founded).
The Group has a foundation with keyboardist Lyle Mays (one of best piano/synth guys out there), but its lineup has changed significantly over the years. A good rule-of-thumb: if Lyle's present it's a Group record, (except for their onetime collaboration, AS FALLS WITCHITA, SO FALLS WITHCHITA FALLS and the orchestral world music odyssey, SECRET STORY). The side-projects may interrupt whatever the Group is doing. Intervals between are random and run for as long as Pat feels necessary. Metheny is an acknowleged master guitarist with a broad vision. The mainstream of jazz embraces the side-projects more for their innovations and understatement, but his dedicated fanbase is built from the Group's longterm existence, touring and recording. Starting at the beginning is the best answer, but any live performance, Group or otherwise, is worth checking out. TRAVELS and THE ROAD TO YOU are legit live Group albums. The former is a summation before Metheny "went Brazilian" and the latter is at the end of this phase. There are a few legit DVD performances and also there's a live Trio date. Lastly, there's a wealth of audio and video bootlegs on various databases, but you have to know when you're getting the Group.
