Since art is subjective, I try not to say who's the "best". But my favorites are Prince and Bruce, in that order.

The first two are easy. Dylan's number one and Prince is number two. After that it gets murky, but Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen certainly stand out. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Out of all the choices, gotta go with Prince first. 2nd would be somewhere among MJ, Stevie, and Madonna.
Never cared for the Beatles or McCartney. Dylan is too far removed from the mainstream these days. Bruce Springsteen hasn't had a huge hit in how long? Mariah is probably the biggest American seller of the bunch right now - which shows how low quality and shitty she is, this being one of the worst moments in the history of American popular music, where Danity Kane can top the charts twice in 3 years. I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Mike. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Most people would say that Elvis was the greatest solo artist in American music, but he's been dead for over 30 years. Others would say Frank Sinatra, but he's been dead for nearly 15 years. So amongst the living, who stands out?

I'm open minded but I haven't gotten into Dylan yet so Prince wins, MJ is tied with Bruce and I'd like to add Aretha, in front of Mariah

It seems like we're sort of talking living legends, here, not so much about who's the very best right now. I'd say...
Dylan Stevie BB King Willie Nelson Bruce Michael Prince all deserve a place on the list [Edited 4/15/08 14:09pm] My Legacy

Dylan Paul McCartney--**exclusively for Beatles work!! he gets a pass, though. Stevie BB King Willie Nelson Clapton Bruce Michael Prince all deserve a place on the list I'd get Eric Clapton the hell off that list. Great guitarist, but really. McCartney hasn't earned a place with his solo work either. Bob and Prince tower over all other contenders in my opinion. The two of them are just freakishly brilliant. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

sorry i have to do this:
but for me seriously...probably the single most underrated guitarplayer (just listen to the 'stardust' album) and one of the greatest songwriters ever. So many classics that have become part of the american cultural fabric. It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

Clapton has never been a favorite of mine, but he's kind of an institution--influential, popular, talented, respected. Paul, definitely only for his stuff w/ the beatles. My Legacy
